From a stop 4- speed not wanted my to go into gear and does grind a little going into reverse. First off it's a 71 440-6 RR 23 spline. Trans rebuild and new clutch. The crank did require the undersized .914 pilot bushing. There is plenty or room for the input shaft, the clutch checked and spins freely. The bell housing checked for run-out with .001 top to bottom and .005 left to right. I was told being the crank wasn't finished honed the bore is probably off and causing the input shaft to bind some and to use the bearing in the torque converter register to solve the issue. Does this should right ? The car was run with 100 trouble free miles then one hot night while cruising it started and got very bad. When the trans was pulled the shaft was blued from heat but the pilot bushing did show some wear one just one quarter of a side, telling me it is off some. Any opinions or thoughts ? Use the bearing or install a new undersized bushing ?

What is the shaft to bushing clearance? Is the automatic crank hole deep enough (input not bottoming)? Shaft bent? Did you lubricate it per the FSM?

Clutch is adjusted properly and the disc spins fine when the pedal is depressed. The hole in crank is deep enough. The shaft isn't bent and measures .748, inside of bushing .750 so .002 clearance. I applied a very small amount of grease but when I removed the transmission there wasn't much sign of any.

Brewers suggested that because the crank was rough drilled and not finished honed for a bushing, thus the reason I used the under size bushing, that the hole is not true and causing the shaft to bind. Has anyone run into this issue ?

How is shifting engine off if input is not hanging up on pilot bushing and clitch is adj. then problem maybe internal. Suppose input is not binding on the outer edge of pilot?

Shifts fine. Only issue is won't go into gear when running. Goes into gear fine with engine shut off. The issue just started. What do you mean outer edge of pilot ? There is 1/2" of shaft exposed past the bushing.

If pilot is not seated it can bind up by input again the bushing. If it shifts engine off then problem internal ir input bearing likely. Something is turning input

Thanks for the responses but I think I found the issue. Checked the pilot hole for out of round/off set and Brewers was right, the rough drilled pilot hole is not round and probably causing the input shaft to bind. I'm installing a bearing and being done with this. Again thanks for the inputs.

Was just going to say, get rid of the bushing and install the roller/needle bearing.

Did you lube the bushing before installing. It probably burnt of what lube was put on it causing a non lube situation. It takes more than a dab of lube. Remember its going to be there hopefully for a long time.
