My brother and I are going to look at a 66 Hemi 4 speed Satellite that is supposed to be no.s matching. How can I tell if the engine is original?

You can't. There is no VIN on a '66 block. All you can do is check the block casting date and assembly date on the pad, and see how those jive with the car's assembly date. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

OK Thanks. Can anyone tell me where the casting no.s are located on the block?

Driver's side about even with the freeze plugs. This picture was taken with the engine in the car, so you can see it if you get under there. Hard to tell in the pic but my first number is 3 (March).

As 64 Bel no positive way. Here a couple of things that if not right will help. On fender tag lower left corner is car build date. Engine assembly date on front pad of block should before car assembly date. Engine cast should earlier than engine assembly date. Need know how to read block pad and driver's side look cast date, will need to be under car even then starter could be in the way.

Where on the block is this pad?

The stamp pad is right on top in front of the intake manifold - driver's side of the center. On mine, the coil obstructs it somewhat. This picture was taken with the coil moved out of the way.

I'm not expert on reading pads BH is for 66 engine the 4 20 think assembly date April 20th. Note his cast date in post #4 3-21-66 is a month before engine assembly date.

And remember that '66 is the only year that H is for Hemi in the VIN.
Good luck and keep us informed of how it goes!
