So Im looking at buying a hemi charger , 1966 auto. The fender tag is gone but the VIN tag is there, H code hemi is there etc.

My question is how can I identify this as a real deal hemi body and not a rebody? Are there any hidden vins, or body characteristics?

Thanks
Matt

If you can go to u tube. Grave yard cars had a what a Hemi 66 Charger has compared to just a big block. I believe spring perches were one. And extra gussets that appear like someone added but were original to stabilized the weight transfer.

Matt,

Look for stamped numbers on the radiator support and possibly passenger side inner fender. Also look for original unmolested pinch welds along the firewall, radiator supports and inner fenders etc. I think there a few different places on the body that should have stamped numbers on letters, serial numbers etc. You should be able to research it. But here's a few places to start. Good luck!

Rad Support, and right beside the drivers side rear bumper bracket, in between the bumper bracket and the licence plate. Actually closer to the bracket, you have to lay on the floor, and look up.

The fender tag and radiator support numbers should match, and on our 67 there is a matching number on the trunk panel brace left hand side if you take the bumper off. That is very hard to see.
I am not good at posting, but would be willing to send my pictures to someone to post, or pm me and I can send them to you if you so desire.
There is a 66 Hemi 4 speed up here for sale. I can check and see if he sold it.

Check for boxed where front of rear springs mount and should be a snubber plate like picture. This picture is right above pinion snubber on rear differential it's a re-enforcement of floor hemi only. Horn and igntion relays on inner fender, not on firewall.

I cant find the video. Unfortunately the fender tag is gone and from what I can tell from research any stampings on the body are sequential build numbers and not the vin. Which I guess could all be verified eventually through chrysler historical or something.

Unfortunately, the stamped body numbers on a '66 don't match the VIN. They'll match the SO number - which is on the fender tag. The only place the SO number and VIN are tied together are through the IBM punch card - which you can get a copy of from Chrysler Historical. Unfortunately, (again) you have to prove ownership to get them to release that. Now, the current owner could get it, but it may take a few weeks.

The car should have torque boxes on the front leaf spring hangers if it's an original Hemi car. There's also the '66 Hemi only starter relay mount next to the battery under the hood. These 2 things can be added to a non-Hemi car, but if they AREN'T there - red flags.

Picture of boxed in front of rear springs, they won't be as pretty.

Red circled relay mount on driver's inner fender.

I almost certain my radiator support had the last 6 numbers of the vin but I’ll look again tonite. Ok I’m wrong, both numbers, front and back, matched the shipping order number

Does it still have the underhood wire harness? If so look for the 4 connector that goes to alt. ignition coil, temp sender, Hemi only from what I’ve seen. Look at the pic on the pass valve cover above.
