I thought the same at one time and when the speed limit gets over 85 the 4:10's may come out and the 3:23 go back in. But that's were it likes to run. So yes cam will set the ratio.

I run 4.30's in my 63 with a 30" tall tire and I drive the highway now and then. Drove it 90 miles on the highway to Carlisle. It turns around 3200 at 60 to 65 and sings right along. Its a pump gas 10.6 comp 440/493 and I am very sure it will go as fast or faster with less gear because of all the great torque it has. I would go with the 3.73 gear and a 28" tire and you will have a nice launching car that can still cruise at 60 to 65 mph. My problem is I love the launch with the 4.30's. Ron
My 2 cents is this. If your never going to the strip and never going with a OD, I would go with a 3.23 You'll be able to cruise at 70-75 with out pushing to much RPM.
Remember if your building a stroker you'll have gobs of torque, and not want to rev it as high.
I have a 440+6 that's just shy of 600 hp I went with 28" tires 3:73's & a gearvendor. This should be like a 2:90 in OD. It'll let me cruise at 70-75 about 2800 rpm and still have the snap of the 3:73s at the strip.

I have the 3.91s with a 28" tall tire 500 horse 440
I turn about 3300 RPMs at 65
I wouldn't run all day on the highway but have driven 90 miles at one time
I would do it again but certainly my driving is mostly local
My plan is a gear vender's OD at some point
I certainly would not go any smaller
