I have been doing some Internet searching in regards to the torqueflite.
I need to find out if I have an issue or not. When I shift into reverse I have a distinct clunk when the gear is engaged. Shifting into drive and park it's very smooth. I have had this car for several years but have not put many miles on it. The transmission has been doing this since I have purchased it.
I have read that this could possibly be just a quirk the torqueflite has. Just need some additional opinions on this. Thanks in advance.

Neither of mine do that.
Sure it's not universal joints or rear end?
Engine mount or Trans rear isolator?
All things to check.

Likely not the transmission, just taking up the backlash (free play) in the rear end. It is typical.

The 66 does have a fairly low stall converter.
If your idle is high then yes the rear might clunk a bit.
But I will stick to what I said earlier as well.

Gotta go with Don, I never even heard a big clunk with a 4000 stall converter. Standing on the brakes will not cover up a bad U-joint.

The line pressure in reverse is much higher than any other gear, the clunk might be a loose rear band adjustment.
