I believe it was somewhere around 1986-1987 area when I was working at a Chrysler dealership back in the day, as far as why I think partly it had something to do with adding more dealerships to sell Chrysler products out of.

Most sellers add as many search tag key words as possible - to get more traffic to look at their listings. There’s a ton of craigslisters near me that will end their posts with: Ford, Hemi, Mopar, Hellcat, SRT, T/A, RT, AMC, Dodge, Chrysler, etc etc. Despite the fact that they might be selling a Kids Tricycle.

yep they add all makes to search

The same time that AMC became Mopars. I have to agree because they were just a purchase Mopar made.

Chrysler bought Jeep in 1987
Wasn't Jeep owned by AMC at the time? I heard that ChryCo was mainly interested in the electronic fuel injection system that AMC developed and AMC was looking for someone to buy them out......so it was a marriage made in hell.....?? If that was true, I think it worked out ok. Wasn't particularly crazy about the Hall effect ignition system but it was what it was and it seemed to work pretty good but having Jeep part of the brand didn't hurt anything.

AMC owned Jeep and was struggling. Mopar bought AMC (to get Jeep) and dissolved AMC cars. About the only thing they kept was their straight 6 engine which they used in the Jeep line for many years.

Absolutely right!! They even screwed up the straight 6 after they bought it, shorted the piston skirts to lighten up the engine and ended up with a whole lot of piston slap.

Didnt some of the AMCs use 727s and were the 360 in the Wagoneers Mopar made...not a Jeep/AMC guy but thought the were extended Mopar bretheren...

Must have corrected that because that old 6 turned out to be a real good one. Just sold a 98 TJ with the 4.0 that had nearly 300k on it and was still original except for maintenance items.

AMC used parts from all of the Big 3 along with the transmissions from ChryCo but don't know about the 360.

I owned many 4.0 straight 6's. This happened in the first few months of 1994. After warming up the slap went away. When it was cold it sounded like a diesel. They offered replacement or extended warranties, I took the warranty.

The inline 4.0 six and Aisin Warner 4 speed auto were virtually indestructible.Had two Cherokee's,89 with 295 K miles and 2000 with close to 120 K miles,"never" had a mechanical issue with either one.Sold the 89 10 yrs ago,it is still running.

258 and 4.0 are some of the best engines ever made

AMC 360 is AMC designed

I bought a 2004 Grand Cherokee new in 2004 just to get the last year for the straight 6. Loved them, but, don't miss the bad gas mileage.

No slap with the one I had and yeah, gas mileage was 16 on the average but anything over 60mph, mpg would plummet.
