I had someone ask me about factory "Body in White" cars. What was the deal with these? Factory bare bodies sent out to drag racers?

Did they have drivetrains or a VIN? I would guess they wouldn't have a fender tag or serial numbers either?

Thanks.

Jim Vignognas Dad & uncle were given 2 cars from Chrysler. An Avenger & Sebring. They were complete cars that had to be gutted & "built"

As I understand it, the BIW cars were that, just bodies and I don't think they had VINs because there wasn't any drive train but I am sure someone has much more accurate information than I do. I do not think the Drag Pack cars (current Challengers) had VINs but they might have. I did read something about not being able to make them street cars due to something other than the obvious lack of safety equipment.

the body in white cars did not have a vin they where like if you striped a car to the shell they had frame rails cowl inner fenders floor pans etc most good racers had them acid dipped a local racer had a 70 cuda pro/stock his also cam with cuda to use for parts if i remember right it was the late John Hagen

Yep, the old body in white cars were just that.....a body shell.

Thanks everyone. I never knew much about them and it came up in conversation.

I think they started in 1965 when the altered wheelbase cars were being built....they started I believe as a body in white shell, and a complete A990 car to be stripped and parts/engine/ trans/ etc installed on the body in white shell after it was acid dipped in many cases.

The NASCAR guys used BIWs. I don't know when it started or when it ended but I think if you were factory backed you called up your guy at the factory and ordered up whatever you needed.

the body in white back in the day late 60s early 70s just the shell nothing no wheels or tires you had to pick them up at the factory. price about $600

Talked about here https://www.mecum.com/lots/PA0819-379971/1970-plymouth-hemi-cuda-sox-and-martin-drag-car/ in reference to this rare non-body in white Hemi Cuda that Sox & Martin raced that had a VIN.
