Whats up mopar people, i have a 318 poly with a 727 and the auto trans just isnt as fun and is already getting warn out. My options now are going to a new 727 with a good torque converter, or swapping it to a a833 trans. I am not knowledgable in mopar stick shift swaps. Can somebody give me their 2 cents and help me out on what i would need to do the swap.

I don't know what make and model B body you have, but I do have a small block belt housing, 23 spline 4-speed, and a used clutch and pressure plate. It was removed from a Street Rod, so the shifter probably won't do you any good.
You will need a 4-speed hump and possibly a cross member, flywheel, 4-speed petals, Z bar and a pivot welded on the frame. It all comes down to what you want to spend. It will cost you more initially, so how much do you want to pay for the fun. Also I don't know much about small blocks as to what you would have to do about the crankshaft and pilot bushings. If it's like the big blocks that might be the deciding factor.

I've got a 65 dodge coronet, really what I'm looking for in comparison is price on the parts. If I can get do a 4 speed swap in around the same price if not less than what I can buy a new with warranty 727 then ill go the 4 speed route.

H A !!

Uhh, you are in for a real kick to the crotch when pricing a 4 speed swap. Even with decent used parts, a swap will likely be at or over $1000.

For a brand new 727 that im looking at im looking close to 2000 or more with everything. So that doesn't sound bad to me

I was LOW balling though.
A decent NEW flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing will be in the $500 range, maybe.
Used Clutch and brake pedals, linkage, floor hump....$300, maybe.
Transmission and shifter, rebuilt or good used, $500 at a bare minimum and that is a rock bottom score of a deal unlikely to happen.
Then the steering column with the automatic shifter is just looking at you....what about that? The 65 Coronet and Belvedere used the same column but what other years interchange? Where will you find a manual shift column ?

does the steering column have to be swapped out? id think it could stay because everything would be disconnected I could just remove the shifter lever. I don't mind if it doesn't look pretty, I just need it to function.

If price a conversion kit from either Passion or Brewers which includes a rebuilt trans( not 18 spline) and every part you need right down to a new rug your talking around 5 grand

Hey, I applaud your determination.
The absolute best bet would be to buy everything from one person. When I sell stuff at swap meets, I usually cut the prices of stuff when a buyer buys a bunch of things.
I don't know much about any possible unique obstacles you might encounter with the '65 model. There may be some "One year only" parts to deal with that really complicate matters.
I am one that often ponders and researches big changes like this before jumping in. I hate regrets....those happen when I've been impulsive and don't learn about all the potential problems that I might face.

that's exactly what I don't want, that's why I came here for some answers haha. Doing more research before and hoping I can do the 4 speed swap to make the driving more fun.

Doing a 4 speed swap isn't terribly difficult, but it has gotten pricy these days. I would say you're at a minimum of $1500 for a trans swap... 4 speeds are hit or miss - i've seen people ask $300 for them and I've seen $1000 for used ones... all depends. Keep your eyes out and you may score one for pretty decent

Is the engine stock? I would suggest a rebuilt 727 with a shift kit (Transgo TF-2). Want some more: change the rear up to a 3.23 (you probably have a 2.92 now).
Mike

Jerry covered it above so it just depends how bad you wanna shift. I am totally against owning automatics and only run 4 speeds, so the cost to me was well worth it on my swap. Some love automatics and that is their gig, but I feel a muscle car needs 3 pedals.

I've got about $1200 in parts and a trans.
I already have a flywheel/clutch that I took out of another car.
I'm doing it on the cheap and buying when the price is right, taking my time.
I still need a bellhousing, shifter boots, shifter rods, z-bar bushing kit, and need to modify my trans mount.
Found some parts from a few local guys who had the stuff, didn't even know these guys existed until I started asking around.
Not inexpensive at all, but s/b worth it.

I think kern was maybe trying to be polite and encouraging with this number. I’d multiply that amount by about 3-4 times......

IMHO If you’re going to do it you don’t want to throw a bunch of unknown used parts at it either.

trans 1000-1200
Early b body hump $160
Shifter and linkage $660
Clutch and pressure plate $500
Used four speed pedals if you can find them $350-500 depending on vendor
Column? .....
Bellhousing $400-600. Not sure which one is required for a poly motor
Z bar, mount and kit $200
Bandaids $20
Trans crossmember and mount if different $100-200
Reverse light and wiring $100
And so on....

It took me about a year and a half to find and buy the parts for my 4 speed conversion in my 70 RR. Cost me almost $3000 and that was with an A833 that needed to be rebuilt so I traded it in as a core and bought a rebuilt, date correct A833 from Passon. I don't think there's any way you can do a swap with good parts for $2000, even doing all the labor yourself, including the welding for the 4 speed hump and the torque rod (z bar) bracket.

The challenge seems to be doing it with used parts under a certain price and im in no rush to gather all the parts, i can leave the car sitting for a bit although nice weather is coming up and would love to drive it, i could miss one driving season. Ill take the challenge of doing it under a certain price, not ill save up some more and get the right stuff. Again pretty is not what im looking for, i just would want it to work. Thanks for the tips

Ill start looking, me being on a budget will be a challenge to go through but i can always stop and save up more to get everything right. I got more time than i do money.
