2005 Nissan CVT Trans

Gents,
I know this is a long shot, but I thought I would give the brain trust at FBBO a shot.

My uncle has a 2005 Nissan Murano with 144k and a CVT trans. It bucks upon acceleration, but it is smooth otherwise. We took it to a local, trusted mechanic and he thought it was the TBI, but alas, it was not. He seems to think it is the trans. I have heard there are some issues with this trans, but I was wondering if there is any hope to save this car and not having to replace the trans.

Any thoughts and comments are much appreciated.

My wife's 05 Maxima did that. Dont remember if it was CVT or not, anyway I purchased the shift solenoids and replaced them.
The manual, or you may find it online, gives an acceptable ohm reading for each, I think there are 4. Maybe 5...
The trans cover is easy to remove its verticle, and the solenoids are right there, just unplug and swap. If I remember correctly they are also color coded.
After speaking with a Nissan tech he warned me of using any other fluid than what they require...that stuff is like $13 qt!!!

I hit agree because one of my coworkers had the dealer do this work and the problem went away.

Its an easy job, probably 45mins...hardest part was cleaning the gasket off the pan...

I also hit agree...my buddy Cliff has worked on those before. Best way to kill that trans is to cheap out and use the wrong trans fluid.
 
I had a customer with a 06 Murano with a bad cvt transmission at 96k miles. Nissan replaced it for free. It had I believe 10 year 100k mile warranty on those transmissions.
 
Man I've stayed clear of anything with a cvt trans in it my dealership buddy's say it's utter junk ! I'd test the ohms as stated but if it's deeper make Shure to sit when you get the price of a new trans I'm told there
$4-6k depending on the model!
 
My Sister bought a former rental (Yikes) 2016 Nissan Altima with one of those transmissions. It conked out at 88,000 miles. It would work right and randomly fail to the point where she could not trust it. She has a history of living paycheck to check and didn't have a cash reserve to fix it. After some savvy letter writing to NISSAN and local dealerships, somehow she was given the offer of a full replacement trans for FREE.

He's guna have to have a good long thought on what he's guna do. Around $2800 for new trans installed. Allegedly they do not re-man them.

Ya, they say there are no serviceable parts in the CVT trans.
 
Are those the type of transmission that have a belt drive and operate like a snowmobile?
 
How much at a junk yard? Dont know if resale is worth $2800 on an 05 even with a working trans.
The Nissan 3.5 motors are great motors and my wifes 05 was a well built car...right up until it started having the trans issue @ 145k...

Yep, his has 145k right now. Even out of a junkyard, yer still buyin a tickin timebomb. He's thinkin he's just guna junk it and get a new car.
 
I can not answer your question directly but..... NISSAN/INFINITY.... CVT. Anything past about 75K miles is a roll of the dice. I've seen newer Sentra's fail way earlier than that. We sell every "good" tran$ we get. These dont seem to have a middle ground, they're good or they're bad. If it's any consolation motors are usually good, and can be had very reasonably - cause there's minimal demand. Oh yes ... PROPER FLUID IS CRITICAL. I don't care what the kid at the Autozone tells you
 
Food for thought. Probably owns car outright by now. If engine is running good, which those usually run forever, then it would only be wear n tear parts, shocks brakes etc in the future. All vehicles will need those, new or not. $2,800 every 145k miles for a transmission is still cheaper than a new car. I'd put a new 12k Cummins in my '03 Ram instead of 70k for a new truck.

He does own it outright. That's kinda what I told him. The car is in great shape otherwise. He is just worried "what's next?"

Still cheaper than a car payment. And won't have the higher insurance rates either. Put the money aside n save it for the "what's next".
 
A friend has a Nissan as a company car with the CVT. It failed within 20k. They replaced it and it's been good so far....
 
We were just thinking...Could it be the motor mounts that is causing it? It does need them...
