Some of you might remember last Summer my wife kissed a tree with the front fender of my Roadrunner. Total damage was somewhere around $3800 give or take. I ended up having to pay the $500 deductible plus about $1k out of pocket since State Farm was only willing to pay up to a $50/hour shop labor rate. I don't know any quality shops that work for that rate much less one that specializes in classics.

Needless to say as the Spring approaches, I'm looking for a new insurer. I haven't had a whole lot of luck on the internet finding claim cases where the insurer agrees to actually cover the car and understands Maaco isn't doing the work. Having to pay $1500 out of pocket was enough and that was a very minor fender bender, I couldn't imagine how much out of pocket I would have paid had it been a major wreck. I'm considering either going with NCM or American Collectors since they are affiliated with USAA but I want to ensure I won't get slapped with a bill I'm not prepared for and that the company gets that it costs more to repair a classic. I know I could probably go with Hagerty and be fine but their quote is about three times what I've gotten thus far. I know, I know you get what you pay for but I'm not going to pay for Hagerty's fluff, marketing, and all the other programs they do to "enhance" the customer experience. I simply don't need it, I just want to know I'll be fairly covered.

Please share your experiences of claims, not just that you've had them for 20 plus years but have never used them. I've seen/read enough of those and to be honest every insurance company would be rated A+ if that's what we based our choices on. It's not hard to take a monthly premium and not have to do anything for it.

I know a guy who lost his Mopar in a fire ( a true crying shame ) and there were others in that same fire lost. He says Hagerty paid him, no BS involved and he could not have done better. Maybe worth it, i don't know?? My experience as a car owner and contractor that has dealt with State Farm is that they will attempt near anything to get out of paying out. And they have been involved in lawsuits and lost over the years for trying to rebuild cars with junkyard materials, even on late model cars. Will be curious to see where you end up, thx.

I have Condon Skelly.
No claims but my policy seems quite good considering how little I pay.

I didn’t know some only pay a maximum shop rate. Wow $50 an hour wouldn’t cover 30% of the costs out here. Very good to know and we all should be checking our carrier after that info surfaced. Of course State Farm is not really much of a classic carrier. I would never use them - especially now. That’s now something I would check before taking any carriers policy. Thanks for the heads up.

I have Grundy and had to make a claim several years ago when some kids thought it was cool to be throwing rocks across a road. Hit my Road Runner in the rear quarter. Couldn't have been happier with the process. Told me to take the car to the bodyshop of my choice and get it fixed. Didn't have to get several estimates and they paid my shops bill promptly.

I bet one of the classic car insurance co. is the way to go. I have never had a claim, but I have it on all my old cars, stated value, no deduct, good rates.

State Farm was only willing to pay up to a $50/hour shop labor rate. I don't know any quality shops that work for that rate much less one that specializes in classics.

Maybe somewhere in Asshole Alabama, or Nowhere N. Dakota. Yeah, you need to find a better insurance Co..

Take a look at Heacock Classic, I have my Viper insured with them. I cannot speak to the claims as I have never had to file one but might be worth checking out.

I have Hagerty also on 5 cars, never had a claim but a friend with Hagerty also had a snow load roof cave in on the back of his demon, I knew the body shop so I asked them how Hagerty treated them , and they said they were great, said to do what it takes to make the car correct again. said it was a pleasure dealing with them.

Whichever Company you choose, make sure you have an updated written appraisal on the car, and let the company know the value when you sign up. You should have a guaranteed value agreed upon when inking the deal. I've found that the more cars you have on a policy, the better the price...

So believe it or not State Farm does have a classic auto policy and it's Agreed Value. I'm about to increase my agreed value so I figured now is the time to get a new carrier. And yes GTX'D, I was just as surprised when the adjuster told me that. Luckily the shop that was doing my work knew a State Farm adjuster that actually understood a few things about cars and had him come out. He included a lot of, lets just call it "additional" work that needed done in order for State Farm to actually cover what they did, otherwise I was going to get stuck with even more of the bill. That's why I was specifically asking for cases where you've had to use the insurance for repairs.

State Farm has been great taking care of me with my normal vehicles. I got rear ended once in my truck they handled everything with the at-fault driver's insurance a few years back and then I accidentally backed into a car in the dark with my wife's car (this was mostly payback for crashing the Roadrunner...j/K) and they took care of that easily, no questions asked. So for that they are great, but to have a limit like that to fix a classic is no bueno. I guess that's how they get you with the "take it to the shop of your choice" but what they don't say is you pay the difference in cost to what is considered the area normal shop rate.

I use NCM. No claims here but I went through the wringer with Bobbi Jo and Adam on stuff like this when I signed up. They seem to be on the right track. Since the C stands for Corvette I did check with a couple locals that had made claims and I was not able to find any horror stories.

I would rather pay a few extra bucks to a classic car carrier like Hagerty, or American Collectors, etc. Rather than the run of the mill regular carriers that treat you like a schmuck.

Screw State Farm. Their actions after 9/11 were enough for me to swear them off forever...

I have Hagerty and have for many years now. I had a claim last summer with them when I managed to drive into the side frame of my garage door (don't ask).
They were AMAZINGLY easy to deal with, prompt, courteous and helpful the whole process and the ordeal was over quickly and the shop they had recommended did a pretty darn good job.
Went above and beyond the actual damage even...
I'll try to find my thread on the whole thing and post it.
EDIT: The thread is in my Garage:

When I got the 440 Dart first running purchased Grundy insurance, rate was great. Fast forward one week. Took it for a test ride, had the throttle cable rub through the wiring and had a large engine fire. FYI carry a medium co2 fire extinguisher. Got the fire out but it left a mess, all plastic melted, carb melted, corrosion from the powder extinguisher etc. They came out looked it over, even caught stuff I missed. This is a week after using them. No issues and paid way more than I would have thought no issues at all. Very happy with them.

I have Hagerty. About 14 years ago I had a wire fire under the hood. I did the fire report and sent it to them. They paid no problem.
