I keep hearing radio ads trying to sell "Title Lock". They say anyone can access your homes title online and transfer it into their name, therby "stealing:" ownership.. Really? Is this actually possible? Has anyone ever actually heard of this happening? I kind of think this may just be a marketing scheme to charge their $14.99 monthly fee.
Your opinions or experiences, please.......

Scam
The marketers are smart. They advertise on stations where the folks tuning in are impressionable and buy into tin foil hat theories

Well, I hear it on conservative talk radio. I don't consider myself impressionable, though. But, I do also think that the ones that advertise identity theft protection may be scams too. I mean, if they are smart and tech savvy enough to "monitor" my credit, what keeps them from "messing" with my credit? I sometimes think they are CREATING the market for their product.....Maybe that earns me the tin foil hat?? :screwy:

No it's not

In MN, my in-laws got scammed by a family friend/lawyer and his business partner. My in-laws had paid off a mortgage, but he didn't release the title. Said he owes 3,000. We had bank records, reciepts etc. Finally had to threaten legal action since we had the property sold.

Found out from the MN title office , ANYONE can climb file a mortgage on your property IF there is no mortgage at the time . It's just a simple form. You have to PROVE you don't owe them money. Harder said than done.

Never tell anyone your property is paid off

Tho, this offer your talking about MAY be a scam, no idea if it would protect against it

How do you prove you DONT owe someone money? Would they not have to prove that you DO owe money? You sign any papers?

To release a mortgage, the mortgage holder has to file a release.

If the mortgage holder provides bull sh*t documents proving you owe him money ( and that's what he did) there's is absolutely nothing you can do to force him to sign besides court.

Our lawyer told us this is a big scam on older people. A lawyer finds out the clients home is free and clear. Drafts up some "consulting fee" even tho he was paid off to make their will and wa-la, if they want to sell their house, they have to Pay him whatever he wants.

There was a law passed after 2008 that made banks more responsible to make sure they file mortgage releases, because properties were being foreclosed/sold so fast, that mortgages were not being released on time, also refinancing.

At the time, it did not help us at all. We had alot of stuff against the guy tho on his previous dealings, so after about a month and 2 lawyers on him he finally said " woops, my mistake"....

The last straw was I filed a complaint with MN commerce commission, and got a real good investigator. He listened, and understood what was going on, and put heat on the guy. The guy had about 100 registered buisnesses .. also filed with realtor association. Our lawyer said it was a great idea, and what finally got him to release it.

This is not the same as the OP's concern of "someone accessing your title electronically and changing it into their name". Even if someone were able to hack and manipulate your county data base, there is a lot of other process and records. Title Lock is preying of people's fears.

Lots of money to be made off of people’s fears.

Yes, you are correct. However, I wanted to make people aware on this thread that there is some threat when it comes to your mortgage. As far as changing the name, I'm sure there's probably some way.. scary as hell

heck if the do that to mine as long as they make the payments it’s all good:lol:
