My "Free" 68 Road Runner

Hey Basket, did you finally get your car painted? (Not to hijack this thread).

JM, just keep plugging away at it.

it's supposed to be, but it leans more towards F5ish, but I love it.

Time and money have been at a premium for a while but I'm finally getting back on top of things and now I have time for the rr again. Yesterday and today I spent tearing apart the brakes and steering to find out what all is needed. I've got brake hardware and auto adjusters coming in the mail as well as new boots for the tie rods and pitman/idler arm. The tie rods and arms all seem to be in decent shape except for the boots being rotten. Also the previous owner seemed to be a "what fits" kind of person and the bolt for the idler seems to be too small and he stuck a copper pipe section into the bushing to take up the slack. It didn't work. There was a lot of slack even when tightened.

In the next couple days I'm going to order a steering box because the output is very loose.

It is cool that you are able to get back into that project. Good luck, and feel free to ask questions here.

Today was a good day, got a big box of parts in the mail today!

Also when I moved I had to leave my bike in california in storage. Well look what also showed up today!

Started working on the brakes today but got really confused really fast.

Here is how they were:

Notice how the auto adjuster isn't doing anything.

And during install of the new hardware the new parts didn't match the existing so I was searching parts and diagrams and installs on here and google images only to find out that there is 11" hardware on these 10" brakes. After that things went smoother.

The way the auto adjuster hooks into the hole seems off though. Does this look right? I'm thinking that once they are adjusted the hook will sit better in the hole.

Is it an 8 3/4? If so just need to swap drums and backing plates

I think the axle is from a 1965 belvedere. It says 65 *** Belvedere on it in yellow marker so probably is still an 8 3/4. We may "upgrade" back to the 11" brakes but for right now we're going to have to rock the smaller brakes.

Do you have the longer shoe on the rear half?

If your adjuster catch isn't touching the star wheel, compare the diameter of the star to your original one. The spring might be a tad long if there's no tension on it (white spring)

The first picture is of the drivers side with the old parts and the picture of the new parts is the passenger side.

I did put the shorter shoe on the rear, my bad, must have been getting tired. I'll change that tomorrow.

Your first pic didn't show. No biggy.

You'll get it!
