Hemi Oil Pan Concerns

I have a 69 Roadrunner with a 426 Hemi stroked to 472, not an original hemi car. The car has an external oil pump setup. My concern is the oil pan sits too low, maybe 2" below the K member. Does anyone have a recommendation for a pan that doesn't sit so low. The car is street driven, no racing.

The external oiling system is going to limit the pans you can use. I've had good luck w/ the cheap 440 source fab'd aluminum oil pan. You just drill the hole in the side for the pickup. It's about 7" deep overall, so it may be slightly shallower than what you have now, but not much.

Depending on what your build consists of, you might consider removing the external setup and going w/ a stock hemi/6 pack pan and internal pickup. Whether you can fit it depends on what crank and rods are in the engine. If you have the 2.2" BB Chevy rods you'll have a lot more room than w/ the standard size BB Mopar rods. From the sounds of it, I'd drop the pan and see if a stock style pickup clears.
 
Don't see hemi skid plate. Skid plate won't help anyway, would have to extend to back of pan. Custom made pan?$$$
 
Biggest thing too is finding out how much volume of oil that external pump moves. Don't wanna go to small on the sump side of the pan and suck it dry.The whole system might end up being way overkill for a street ride. 6qt. pan may work well until you suck the pan dry and all the oil ends up in the engine. That deep pan may be there for a reason and you might have to change more than just the pan. That feed line for the suction side of the pump on the bottom of the pan looks pretty big. Better find out if its overfill or if it is indeed moving that much oil at once.
 
have you checked the ride height ? depending on where you live if you raised it 1 in would that help ? if the ride height is low well then auj as needed .
 
Thanks for all the feedback. I guess the first step would be to pull the pan and see what I have. Can the pan be pulled without raising the engine. I'm new to the Mopar world. I'm doing some upgrades and may adjust the stance to get the look I am going for. Since it is brakes, suspension, engine stuff and other I'll start a new post.
 
I have been street driving with the deep pan over 30 years. Scraped it one time when a weld wheel spit apart on the expressway at 70 mph.
If I can drive in NYC I can drive anywhere!!:lol:

Yes, you can pull the pan without moving the engine. Just drop the draglink out of the way.

Compare the 440 source pan on the left to the deep Milodon like hemi-itis has on the right.

As suggested, run the "road race" pan with a skid plate and you'll be all set. Caution: they make two "road race" pans, one for a stock internal pickup and one for an external system like you have - make sure you get the correct one.

The pic below gives you an idea but the line on the pump on your Hemi probably comes out the back of the pump.

I had a years-ago bad experience with my 70 Cuda 440-6 running a deep Moroso pan. I rolled through an intersection and didn't see the back-to-back dips in the otherwise smooth road. Well I was able to shut it down, look at the mess, wait for the flatbed, get a new lower profile pan and install it weeks later. Not worth it. This was in Long Island NY. I won't risk a deep pan on the street if I don't have to. More recently I bought a low profile 7qt Milodon pan 30930 during a freshen up of my in my 472 Hemi in my 64 Sport Fury. Prior to the engine re-do I had a stock pan (crate Hemi) and the skid plate on the K member. The Milodon pan hung too low for my strickly street cruiser. After carefully measuring I had a fabrication shop section 1 1/8" from the pan and pickup then had to clearance the pan slightly for one of the connecting rods. I ended up with a 6 1/2qt pan so I added a remote oil filter set up for insurance. Sorry for the long stories but I think you can go with a stock type oil pump pull your existing pan, section it along with a new pick up and seal up the external port. Money-wise I think you will be ahead. Deep pans look cool but... Sorry no photos.
 
jrpontiac...Like a couple of the other guys said, the Milodon road race oil pan will probably be your easiest route. It will work w/ your existing oil system and is a heck of a lot shallower. For what you're wanting, I'd probably go that route instead of changing to an internal pickup. The external oiling is great and has no downsides really. Unless you're after a more stock appearing setup.
 
I got my C10 project done so I have torn in the RR. I attached some pics. Found aluminum rods (mmt2014) can’t find anything on google, a knife edged crank, ross pistons, roller cam. I’m pretty sure the rods and crank are 20+ years old, probably older.

I want to convert to road racing pan but not sure if I will have clearance issues. Or are clearance issues not a concern with the rod racing pans.

I thought maybe the pistons specs might help determining the rods.
