I am looking for the source of a power steering fluid leak in my '72 SSP. In the process of cleaning things up as a first step, I found the tag "1112" on the steering box. Does it help using this number during repairs/restoration or is it just a factory thing and no longer relevant 50 years later? Thank you.

I find when I turn the steering wheel all the way to the stop, either right or left, the power steering pump makes a squawking noise and shoots fluid from no less than 3 pin holes in the pressure hose. Of course, one pinhole is aimed directly at the exhaust manifold. And to think I already replaced that pressure hose a few years back--nothing lasts anymore. Now to find a part number ('72 318 Satellite auto).

My guess is its the Julian date the box was made.
If your looking for a hard to find leak put some uv dye in the power steering box and run it for a bit then shine a uv flash light around the leak will glow like neon sigh.

The first three numbers might be the days of the year and the last number the year

That makes sense (on the date). I am hoping that is a Saginaw pump, going to order the pressure hose tomorrow.

Is the pulley pressed or bolted on? If there’s a nut holding the pulley it’s for sure a Saginaw.

Man, I never take my power steering to full lock and if it does happen, I get off of it pretty quickly.
