Motor Mounts...different heights?

My 68 charger...most everything under the hood is stock. It was special order Canadian car...it was delivered with the silenced California duel snorkel. The drivers side snorkel tube rubs on the hood ever so slightly. Not at rest...but with a little revving it moves just a bit with the rock of the engine and rubs. Not even enough to make a mark on the snorkel....but the paint is rubbed off the upper hood. Watching with the hood up and big revs the engine does not rock anymore than one would expect...so the motor mounts I think are fine. They are just stock ones.

Any ideas on how to maybe remedy this?

Hence my question in the title...are there mounts that you can get that lower just a bit?

Would a worn rear mount in the transmission cross member cause the engine to be tipped up a bit in front?

I apologize if the questions are elementary...still in the learning phase!

Thanks so much.

How thick is your carb base gasket?

Just normal...I think.

I have a 1968 GTX 440 motor and there is only a paper gasket between the carb and manifold.
Maybe yours is supposed to be like mine?
I think I saw in an earlier post some info on this subject but I cannot remember the details.

Ok. Will check the parts manual and see what belongs there. I appreciate the info.

I have the exact same gasket as yours. I believe that is the correct oem thickness, around 1/4" I think. If it's too thin (universal paper style) there's more chance of heat transfer from the intake, risking percolation. Too thick and you have possible clearance issues. Is it the original air cleaner assembly to the car including the base?

Pretty sure right base and air cleaner....ignore the manly pink sheet! Lol

You may have a c body base, or, engine flex from the usual stock rubber mounts. Chain it down tight on the driver side. see if problems solved . I don't believe a dual snorkel 68 is all that rare, but california sold more than canada, so all those people must have had the same problem.

Ramcharger...ok will pull off the base tomorrow and post a pic and see if there is a number on it. Hopefully someone can let me know if I can’t figure it out. I don’t need much for it to clear.

thx to all so far.

Rev the engine with the hood up and see how much lift you are getting on the left side. You might need help with this, like someone in the car holding the brakes with the car in gear and accelerating the engine some. You could possibly have a broken motor mount there. Also it may be possible that a collapsed transmission mount could tilt the motor up on the front allowing a little less clearance. The pictures indicate to me that the air cleaner base could be the wrong one as was mentioned. Also is that a single snorkel air cleaner or dual?

Jerry Hall...Dual Snorkel. Gonna post pics of the base in the AM. Hope you can have a look to see.

In the fall I did exactly as you described. Didn’t seem to be any excessive movement or roll in the engine.

Will also post a pic of the rear mount tomorrow AM. Have a look and let me know what you think.

I am a learning guy here...so appreciate anything you can add.

Not sure if there's 2 different housing styles but this one appears to be a lower profile version

I agree here, most stock 68 Chargers that I have seen have a small round unsilenced air cleaner with no snorkels.
I wasn't sure if there were 2 different heights available regarding the dual snorkel upper housing. I have the stock round low restriction version on mine.

The only other alternative would be if your air cleaner uses the same diameter filter as the round low restriction versions, you could possibly use that style base plate with a shorter height filter and it may give you the clearance needed while still keeping the dual snorkel lid.

There is no way to put a shorter filter in that air cleaner as the base plate also seals to the top cover so the air cleaner itself has to seal to both top and bottom, meaning a specific height. On your setup the cover is bigger than the base and there is air gap all the way around where the air enters and is still filtered.

Your style base with his top would work.

So this is the base I have....is this the “lower” or the higher base.

Looking at the picture from nicksgarage....it looks as if the base I have is the one on the left in the bases photo.....

But the top looks like the height of the one on the right in the top portion photos
