Hey Guys,

I have a 383 69 RR and need to prime the oil pump, the engine is going to be sitting for a while and I want to make sure its getting oil. I have the tool does it go clockwise or counter clockwise?

Thanks!

It's counter-clockwise. If you have a later cast iron intake, there may be a circular arrow indicating this. A stock 69 intake does not.

Thanks, good thing I asked because I thought it was clockwise!

You also will want to hand crank the motor at least 360 when priming also so the valve train gets lubed also. Goes through the cam one side at a time.

I didn't know that, thanks, I'll make sure I do that!

This should help

Careful holding the drill, when that pump loads it that drill will really catch your wrist.

Didn't think of that, I'll make sure I have a good grip on it. A lot of good information folks! I appreciate it!

I found that out the hard way a friend ut a new cam in and the passenger side was not getting oil. After a ton of troubleshooting pulled the cam and it was only partially drilled out!:mob:

Damn, that's not good, hopefully you didn't run it like that!

Wasted the new roller rockers and the shaft. It was a Howards cam they took care of the parts. Valve guides survived though just went into break in mode when he found it had a issue. Was fun to find. @MoparMitch

Damn, Glad they took care of the parts. I won't be breaking in for a couple of months, my car is in paint jail...

I would wrap tape, or use shrink tubing on the shaft where it goes through the bushing, to protect it from the sharp edges.

Post #5 is critical, it often takes me more than one full rotation to be sure the oil is up to the rockers. Both valve covers off & slowly hand crank it so the oil feed holes get a little time to take the oil.

Can you wash off cam-lifter assembly break-in lube if you prime too long.....

Probably not. I've never heard of that. Break in is more about keeping the rpm between 2200-2600 and keeping the lifters rotating.

IMHO, cranking the motor by hand a few revolutions will not wash off assembly lube.
