My '77 440 has the oil dipstick coming out of the side of the oil pan, is there a provision on the block to convert it for a car? It's going in my 69 Coronet, so I will be putting the correct 5 or 6qt pan on, my question is, what do I do about the dipstick?

The dipstick going into the oil pan is usually a truck / RV oil pan setup. I don't recall if the hole is drilled in the block and just capped off with the oilpan, or if the hole will need to be drilled in the side of the block?

The dipstick goes into a place on the block just above the pan rail
You can see it better in this picture taken while we painted the engine

As for dipstick , I used a chrome one from Mr Gasket and it fit fine in my car (66 Charger) other than a minor bit of bending around a header tube

That is the hemi pan holding 6 quarts

my 77 truck block had a gob of cast plugging the top of the hole. I drilled it from the pan side up and then took a die grinder to smooth of the top for the dip stick tube to fit on flush.

Curious, what sort of truck was that? Was the "stock" dipstick port just not machined?

the motor was in a 77 3/4 pickup. not sure if it was original to that put have no reason to believe it wasn't.It had the rear sump pan with dipstick in the pan.I have seen lots of pickups and motorhomes like this but this is the only block i've used. the port is there just not machined. I still have the pan and pickup and dipstick if any one needs one.
