So I was mocking up my motor this weekend and noticed that some of the coolant passages were partially/totally blocked. Is the slit normal, and the lower passages are totally blocked???
Is this normal running RPM heads.
Thanks

Also Mike (you probably know already) but look closely to make sure those 1009s don't hang over the bores at all anywhere.

Yes sir, they seemed pretty loose around the studs I placed ( only 3) for mock up. Noticed that they dropped down and could slide out of alignment.
Thought about some copper cote on the corners to help hold them in place. Of course when I did this I did not have my deck facing straight up...

I was told the gasket slots were to slow down coolant flow....gives the coolant more time to pick up heat.....sounded good to me, but I m no engineer , went to public school.....

Fel-Pro 1009's have a bore diameter of 4.410", a 0.060" overbore is 4.380" so you shouldn't have an issue like that.

The head dowels are supposed to keep the gasket in place and not allow it to move. If you are missing the dowels, or they are damaged and do not fit snugly in the gasket dowel hole, replace them. Please resist the urge to use any copper coat on the head gasket.

Thanks BEE!
Ya I ordered some new ones last night after thinking about it, mine were removed for machining and not replaced.

Here's a pic of an OE gasket for posterity...first head removal since factory assembly, '78 440. Same skinny slots even with the bigger figure-8 cooling holes.

Just a note. Double check your piston to head clearance with those reverse dome pistons. Are you using the open chamber rpms or the closed?

Thanks , they are the open ones, 84 or 88 cc , I forget. I dont have my pushrod yet, still have to measure and order those.
I was planning on degreeing my cam, measuring this weekend and will clay them to make sure. I have an adjustable PR and checker springs ; my question is can I check w/ those or does it need to be done with a real spring?
Thanks

Looks like the slits are more centered over the passage on the stock gasket than mine and I cant tell in the pic are the lower passages blocked off ( closest to header side)? Mine are...
Thanks Bean!

Earlier blocks just had a round hole, but later 70's blocks had a larger peanut shaped hole

As 69Bee said, the later blocks have a bigger hole. (If you look real close at that gasket you can see the crud outline of the figure-8). The only holes at the exhaust-side of the gasket are for the head bolts, just like your fel-pro. For water, there are the slits between the cylinders, a big hole at each end and that's it.

what's your quench
The .028 Mr gasket could tighten it up a little if necessary
also heard some good things about other gasket mfg recently
hylomar does not attack the blue- or even worse the old red ones
(if you have some corrosion the mill did not get)
