Chrysler 8 3/4 Axle bearing and Seal R&R...A How To

Just adding to the list of thank you's...I'll be using this guide this week and weekend as I start tearing my rear end apart.

Thanks.

This job is well above my pay grade and I do not have access to a press, but I thank you for the procedure and pictures. I read the entire procedure last night in my factory service manual, but your description and procedure is much easier to comprehend. Thanks for this posting (I have it bookmarked).

Blast from the past!
Everything is still going good on the rear seals, no leaks snd bearings are very quiet.
Bill, the press is mandatory. But you can see how simple the procedure is to remove. I'm sure a shop can do it for minimal charge. With the axles out, I could ptobably have them both done in 30 minutes without rushing. Figure $50-$80 labor for both which isn't bad if you supply the parts.

I have the same problem, I replaced the seals twice on my 66 Belv 8.75 axel and it still leaks, but there are things I learned from this and other threads that might help in my 3rd seal replace.
Waiting for the seals to come, then I will post an update.

Working on my 8.75 as I type, thanks for the photos and procedure. It’s been many years since I’ve worked on my car, I’ve had since 14, and I’m surprised how much I like to know what I’m doing before a project. When I was a kid it was just jump right in and get the parts flying, hahahahaha

Sorry didn't post my update soon, but I end up with changing the axle housing, I got it from a 66 Belvedere wagon, as my axle housing is over sized / scored badly earlier.
Put new seals, installed everything back and it is not leaking anymore.

The vent on the housing should be checked to make sure it is clear. I have seen several that get plugged with rust or dirt, then pressure builds up and forces the seals to leak.

THREEWOOD...
ABSOLUTELY..... a great example of a "how - to" presentation ......EXCELLENT graphics with a well written verbal accounting, especially with the potential safety hazzards that may occur, using the tried and true professional method of instruction: (1) tell your audience what you're going to tell them, (2) then tell your audience, (3) then tell the audience what you told them...VERY WELL DONE....congrats. Best regards,
BOB RENTON

I am glad you mentioned greasing the bearings. In 1978 the guy who replaced the inner seal on my '65 Imperial didn't know that and I ended up stranded 400 miles from home but that's another story for another time!

Nice pic of the outer seal in the retainer plates. Some folks forget about those.

Thanks for this tutorial! Excellent...

Where do you suggest we source the bearings/races etc? Who's the best place?

Just wanted to say thanks for the post, it was concise and well written. It was a success and my rear turned out spot on.

Did you remove and replace the ten studs in the housing? Were they welded in?
