Who has been put out of work and sent home ?

Strange painting contractors are considered essential. I have a house that the painting was supposed to start in this week and will not be happening even though it is vacant. No one would be there but us. But not deemed essential. But still if one of my customers homes develop a water leak some where it can be fixed.
Our one son is a cabinet maker with less than 10 employees in the shop. They and all home builders are closed down in the area. Two other of the kids are in trucking not sure this will effect either of them. The last working one is into the manufacturing of plastic containers for food items. Pretty sure the only way they will shut down is if the virus force it.
I just don't see where staying open for us is worth the health risk we are both over 60 with issues.

I am always behind the curve in new trends or warnings. I have to see things right in front of me to accept them. I don't follow trends or join in with others to be accepted.
THIS is another example of the same.
What the hell is going on, really ? I don't buy into this. I have been carrying on with my regular life but the shroud of doom and gloom is hanging above us all. I am trying to balance between being my usual self and also trying to be open to what is happening to the world around me.

Hey Kern, I was a non believer too. A week ago I was saying that this is just an storm in a tea cup. Alas, I must admit defeat and see this for what it is. A serious thing. I am so sad for our brothers out there that have businesses and responsibilities, to ensure others are able to put food on their tables. I pray for a speedy end to all of this. Keep safe y’all.

I don't know guys; a lot of us car guys have a way of thinking about things differently than others who are not say mechanically inclined. No knock to them; but having worked with people like this they don't seem as curious about how things work or drilling down to root causes on some problem. You know, what IS the problem cuz if we can't find it we can't fix it. I see this a lot on construction jobs where the build schedules are fucked up because not enough forethought/planning was given to this so end up with a cluster **** of guys tripping all over each other. I had a humorous story when I did the electrical in my new house (I was the grunt as my father-in-law was the master electrician) and clustered up with the HVAC guy on the 2nd floor loft. He didn't know I was the owner and didn't tell him as we debated on the location of a vent and my electrical outlet and we both stared at the same print coming away with different out takes. Anyway, in my case on the construction site today we ended up with 25 guys cramped into one area getting in the way of each other and ahh social distancing? Nada. Meanwhile endless sq. ft. of the building with nothing going on.

As I continue to hear more and think more on this covid I'm believing now it's not so much a matter of avoiding the bug as to when it will snag me as a geezer now. Following the stories, timing is a lot as to 'when' if needing critical care and the hospital can't provide it being overwhelmed...

when money (business and industry) shuts down, and markets crash (not just stocks; but oil, metals, ect)....... it becomes pretty obvious this **** is real...... we are living in and witnessing some F'ed up times

The Governor in MI just put in an emergency Shelter in Place order effective 12:01 AM on the 24th for everyone not in an essential industry/job. I work in a chemical plant and the feds say we are essential, so here I sit, sort-of. To do our part in protecting people, the plant has staggered the shop labor force into two sets of people. One group works odd weeks and the other group, even. Still with pay on the off week, for now. (Must say that was mighty stand up of the company) Silver lining is I will have some time now to get more work done on the car. I feel for those who who got stuck with the no income part of this deal and even more so for those who are sick or who have lost someone dear to them.

You haven't seen nothing yet. If we don't stay away from each other for 3 weeks or so and let this thing run it's course, it will never stop jumping from person to person. The faster we play the game, the faster we get back to normal. It's sad to see and watch as young people I know that are wondering what to do and how to get by. Several have my back and I have theirs. No one expected this to happen and I would rather help them now and pay it forward as to watch them pick up what's left of their lives later and wished I would have helped. If you can help, do it!!!

Massachusetts' RINO Governor, Charlie Baker (rhymes with faker) has shut down "non-essential work" in MA starting at noon on Tuesday. Fortunately for us, residential construction workers are exempt.

Daughter working from home in Dorchester area.

Good news for my son. His boss said since they are only a 2 man crew and are finishing up siding board and batten on a barn outside by themselves. They are going to keep working except for Monday cause of possible snow but definite rain all day...
Bad news... The governor shut down the county my son is working in and he got a text from his boss saying they are done until further notice...

Michigan on lock down as of right 12:01 tonight. Home for the next 3 weeks minimum. Time for some garage time with the kids for some family bonding on the cars and home projects for the next few weeks.

We’re running trains with hardly any passengers. Shop is near empty. When this passes, the overtime and work load will be FRENZY. Electro mechanics etc. Big time backed up work load.

I wouldn't mind some time off but I am grateful to be working.
My last company would sometimes have a little down time between projects. I liked it because it allowed me to get some stuff done at home. It is that downtime that displayed to me that retirement will be just fine when I get there. I can find all sorts of things to do.

This experience that we are all living through could be a HUGE social experiment on how we live from now on.
Will we stand further away from people? The Wife hopes so. She HATES it when other customers in a line crowd close to her.
Will we continue to wash our hands as much? Not likely.
Will anyone make it a point to put some money away for times like these? I hope so. I haven't lived "Paycheck to paycheck" since 1993.
What are the chances that we actually move away from a dependence on cheap Chinese products?

Kern, I think things will be much different after we get through this. Think what it will be like next time just a common flu gets started next winter. Will people freak out like this again? What about events with large crowds ? I hope things will be what used be thought normal will return.

Well I am officially home till April 24 unless some kind of emergency occurs. Just maybe I can get some work done to the house now. This building project has been going on now for 6 years.

I saw a funny post on Facebook...
It said something like "Well guys, Now what will your excuse be when you told your wife you will fix it when you have time"

I fix other peoples homes for a living and have had to scrounge time for my own. Now if the weather cooperates. It has been over 5 years since this much time has been available.Taking time to clean the truck out on Saturday's and make sure everything is ready to go for Monday doesn't leave much time.
