Bought a Belvedere ll sight unseen. Haven't gotten my hands on it yet. Has an original 273/904 in it.
First question is, did these cars come with 8-3/4 rear ends, or something smaller?
Second question- does the 8-3/4 reference just the ring gear size, and if so, are the diff./axle housings the same for all gear sizes? I remember back in the day my buddies would pull the axles and remove the entire frontloader. The "pig", as they used to call it. Guess I should have paid more attention.....1

Your car should have an 8-3/4 rear end, if it is original to the car, '67 Belvedere ? You will be able to change out the "pig" to another gear ratio, if looking to. The axle housings themselves, came in different widths, to accommodate the particular year & model they were installed in, at the Factory...

Well I can't say for sure if your model would have had an 8-3/4 as standard equipment, but yessir that is the ring gear size. 8-3/4 housings and axle splines are all the same; except the length(or width?) varied depending on car model. 3rd member/carrier/(pig/chunk/pumpkin lol)came in 3 different series, identified by the last 3 digits of the big number cast into the side of it. The 741(low-HP/torque applications) used the smaller yoke and pinion, 742 and 489 were the bigger (and more desirable) series. 742 is generally from 1968-down while the 489 is 1969-up, though there was some overlap there. Generally you use parts for your specific series of carrier, although any carrier can be put into any housing. Just have to match the rear U-joint with the pinion yoke size.

Pretty much all v8 B bodies 68 and older had the 8 3/4 except for the 440 and Hemi 4 speed cars with the Dana 60's. The 8 3/4 does refer to the ring gear size. I believe most of the 8 3/4 center sections were interchangable all the way up to 1974, the last year of the axle.

I've seen them with baby rears - the 7 1/4. Hopefully you have the 8 3/4.

Had a 69 and a 70 that came with a 8 1/4 '' too. But I'm pretty sure that a 67 would have a 8 3/4''.:xscuseless:That way we can tell for sure.By the way Hi Mark ! Thanks for joining up.

According to the dealership date book (from Hamtrack Historical) 6 cylinders got the 7 1/4, all V-8s for the 8 3/4 except the manual trans Hemi and 440 cars with the Dana

nearly all 1966 B body cars except 6 cyl that I've seen came with an 8 3/4

for 67, I've seen some 273 and 318 cars come with a 7 1/4

My luck...whatever the good one is, I'll get the OTHER one.

If there's no cover bolted on the back side, you gotcha an 8-3/4. If it is, look at the big casting number on the driver's side behind the yoke and let us know what the last three numbers are.

Car is not in my possession yet. As soon as it shows up from CA, I will send pics.

I have a 67 Charger body, rusty, originally from Illinois. It had A/C, 318, 2 core 26 inch rad, that I have, console car, and a 71/4 differential.

blowing spider gears with a 7 1/4 in an A body is bad enough. I imagine they didn't last long in a B body. I've seen many with an 8 1/4 which seemed to be the norm with the small blocks.

8 1/4 was not available in 66/67

Ok, so the car finally showed up. Here's a picture of the rear end serial number...and a couple more. I have low standards, but I'm pretty happy. My son is amazed...it was worth 10 times the price to see him get excited about building this car.
Anyone that can tell me any of the history of this vehicle, I'd appreciate it. I have no idea what all the identification numbers mean....

That looks like a 741 case 8 3/4 which is date correct.

My guess is a 2.94 gear.

I LOVE that color.

The best resource for 66/67 fender tag decoding while not complete is the 66/67 Charger site.

I don't have the link handy, but it's been posted here several times.
