As a kid I used to go to the dry cleaners with my pa. The real dry cleaners that actually did the dry cleaning (not send it out). It had this chemical smell that I never forgot. Funny how smells invoke memories. I think this is why I like the smell of brake cleaner. They smell the same......

Did you know that Perchloroethylene is used in both? Thats the smell I remembered. I know that stuff can’t be very good for you so I use it with some level of respect. But I wonder if wearing clothes cleaned in that **** had any residue or not. I mean its a great degreaser and I never seen any residue.......

Oh and did anyone see the old commercial or documentary showing the modern marvel of dry cleaners where they had folks walking into a pool of that stuff and walking out?

Oh found it!

I own a dry clean store, and as far as I know you don't get any residue in your clothes, after washing the garment, for 15 minutes in a closed circuit you recover the solvent you centrifuged to purified it, then you heat it up the washing drum to 70°celcius for 15 minutes and then you cooled down to 10 ° celcius, for another 10 minutes, not only a great degreaser but also a great way at least for me to remove all undesirable stuff as well.

It does...and I have successfully used brake cleaner to get stains out of clothes too :)

So they still use perchloroethelne? Imagine a gear head having access to.....wait a minute you ever clean your parts in there?? JK...

Kent "Cleaner and Spotter" is also a good spot degreaser. We used it at the dealer to remove grease spots from car interiors. (and your clothes) I see it has Tetrachloroethylene. I see it has been discontinued at least by Lawson Products (the supplier)
I'm no chemist but it must be similar. LOL
1,1,1-Trichloroethane 71-55-6 40-70 Tetrachloroethylene 127-18-4 30-60 Carbon Dioxide 124-38-9 1-5
