I am a plumber in a hospital I repair all normal problems and service all med gases and its source equipment. I would rather not be working in a hospital now. I have always said its not what you see that will get you working here. Its what you dont see. Now its really true. I should have stayed in new construction where I was for 35 years. I am staying because I think it would be chicken S**t to quit now.

Yes but do you want to be the chicken that gets to poo at Christmas.

Just stay at distance and wash your hands 400 plus times a day. You are smart to be worried as it means you have good common sense

Are there any nurses there who need their drains snaked?

I would be using PPE even if I had to purchase it myself. This virus is highly contagious, you need to protect yourself! 440'

Personally I'm thankful after reading the post of those who have lost their jobs.
I also work for a hospital and our demographic is geriatric which is the highest risk. Following CDC guidelines to the nth degree and taking the best care of our patients we possibly can.
If everyone walked off who would care for those needing help? I'm not frontline but still feel obligated and appreciative.

Hospitals and nursing homes are the Petri dishes of the world. Being a plumber is no joke in those habitats. Cover yourself bro - cause no one else will.

I think you sir are one of the unsung hero's out there on the front line. Helping to save lives. Where would the people in that hospital be, without med gas, oxygen, or even being able to wash their hands ? Imo you are as necessary as the docs !

I'm in the retail paint/hardware business so we can stay open, deemed essential. My staff is on the younger side and I gave them all the option to keep working or close down. They chose to keep working so I'm still open with reduced hours. I'd rather be home but if my guys work, I feel funny not being there. I'm not out on the sales floor much but still exposed. Business is only off about 20% over last March, so I'm not complaining. If you have to be out and about, protect yourself !!!

I'm self employed, and can't draw unemployment. If i don't work, i don't eat. I'm thankful for the little work i am getting. Though, i'll definitely be happier, if life returns to normal.

Well, I feel your pain. Having worked plumbing and HVAC in hospitals, I can tell you, don't wait around for anyone to say, THANKS! So, I'll say it for them.... THANK YOU for your service, and don't feel obligated to stay at work on my behalf.

I’m a seasonal government employee, I paint their buildings. I go back to work on Monday. I’m frightened, but I’ll take precautions. Fortunately, all of my buildings are shut down so I’ll be going straight to work from my house and locking everyone out when I’m there. Then straight back home after work.
My wife works the front line of health care. She is in every day, actually touching around fifty sick patients per day. I can’t in good conscience justify staying home while she is doing that.
The sad thing is that previous to this she was in the process of putting her retirement together. Now she feels obligated to take care of her people so she is gonna ride this out.
Also, people, remember that there is more to front line health care then doctors and nurses. I can’t count the Facebook posts thanking nurses for all that they do. Remember that lab, x-ray, respiratory therapists, and many others are directly in harms way, also. That person running the ventilator keeping you alive isn’t a nurse. That person drawing your blood while hoping that you don’t cough on them isn’t a nurse. Even though they aren’t in it for the glory it’s very discouraging to see all of the nurse posts. Even janitors mopping toxic waste are very much at risk, and they are doing it for minimum wage.

Weeeeeeeell.... I sort of am and sort of am not..... :realcrazy: Yes I am listed as an essential business. Two weeks go business started to slow.... By the end of last week things were just a trickle. My guys are off minimum the next to weeks. (I hope they stay healthy!) We're primarily wholesale, dealing with "shop" customers, garages/car lots/body shops. But many of those are closed and nobody is buying cars right now.
Ok that's the back story. Meanwhile back at the ranch....... We have one of the tallest billboards in the state situated on our property. (I did not realize billboard construction was an essential business) Any way they are converting the billboard to digital. So I've been here everyday to open the gate/lockup when then done ect. And trying to take care of a few accounts that are still calling.
Check it out -

I work in the aerospace industry. Component stuff for new and existing aircraft. On 1/2 time right now, business is way down as very few commercial aircraft (worldwide) are Flying. The 1/2 time is no pay furlough. it may be many months before that recovers.

Be thankful there's many that'd give their eye teeth
or their left nut  to have a great job...
Even right now & even under these trying circumstances & times...

your doing a job that needs to be done :drinks:
& it's appreciated by most too, even those that you can't see or hear

:usflag:

I work maintenance(specialize)in electric for a local school system. We split our crew last week and at least through this week doing 3/2,2/3 days at 6hrs. per day. Talk of going down to 1 day a week but have not heard yet. Nobody in the schools except us and custodians....my argument is NO ONE needs to be there until the kids come back. What the problem seems to be is they don't want us sitting at home and doing nothing and still get paid. BS in my book, it is about safety not money. Besides, our salaries are already figured in to the current budget...we get paid for 80 hours or zero hours.

I'm the maintenance guy in Juvenille hall. I'm working part time so I guess I'm not as essential as I'm thoght. I'm getting paid for full time so it's not bad. Now the boss is trying his best to limit entry into the building and I understand that. But I feel like I'm working enough to get exposed but not enough to get my work done. I'd rather be working full time or not at all.

For most of my career, I worked for one company. There would often be a little bit of a gap between construction projects. I enjoyed the break. That company closed down and I'm with another company. I've been on this job for 4 months and I am ready to move on. I would not be upset at all if we got sent home.
