Changing my 72 Charger from a column shift to a floor shift. Removed the setup from a donor car, disassembled and cleaned and ready to put back together. Question: Should there be an inner tube or shaft around the actual steel shaft? I inspected the column shift and it had the inner tube, but that was for actually shifting the car. Looked at my 68 ,but that's totally different. HELP!!

Just a shaft in there I'll see if I can dig mine out for pictures

Was that something that changed on the later cars?

So auto on column has the tube and auto on floor no tube, right?

This is a console shift column, they are the same up to the point that the intermediate shaft is now a shifter shaft. The end of the intermediate shaft will have provisions for the trans linkage.

I can't recall any tube on my 74 floor shifter column! I'm able to see the shaft throught the outer shell

I removed the assembly as a whole. I didn't lose any parts, it just didn't come with the tube. If it had it originally wouldn't the two white spacers still be on the outer sleeve? At this point I'm not sure if it is needed. 68Moparmaniac, what year column is that? I dont see the notch for the flasher and the end of the tube is different

The pics are of my 68 Charger RT, floor shift column. The column consists of a outer "housing" then the transmission "selector tube" then the actual "steering shaft" I have a crappy pic of a 72 column but I think you can see the selector tube well enough.

I recently pulled my steering column to repaint and fix up a bit on my 72 RR. I had no inner tube. If it matters, I have floor shift

From the posts here by later model b body
owners it tells me that these didn’t have the inner tube. I have learned something new
and really appreciate it.

I replace my column shift to a floor shift on my 72 Plymouth. First I did not take the main shaft out of the steering box. I disassembled the steering column and unbolted the column from the floor. I removed the column and replaced it with the new floor shift column. Did not have an inner tube. That tube is for the Automatic on the column. Also replaced the normal steering wheel with a TUFF.
