68 RM23 Roadrunner, The rebuild of an old friend

Thanks Hawk.
God I am sick of blocking. 4 laps around the car at this point. It reminds me why I went to college. I forgot how much real estate is on these B bodies. On more final "finish" lap before paint.
Plenty to do yet. "Almost there" isn't in my vocabulary yet.

A good paint job only reflects what's underneath. I hate bodywork! Lol

Looking good

Me too. Some days I really get into it, most days it's a mind numbing experience.
As a rule, never, ever bitch about what a body shop charges, especially for a quality job.
It is a **** ton of work.

Mocking up the hood for the last time tomorrow with the new hinges that showed up today then tearing the front end apart again for paint on the "hidden" spots then on to painting the engine compartment, fenders back on then doors off.

Ran into some issues with the alignment with the new hinges. Nothing hat Eddie MS customer service, lighter struts and a 1/16" shim couldn't solve. Great support there but still yet another delay.
Back apart again for single stage on the mating surfaces and engine compartment prep and paint. The only snag at this point is that my local Finish Masters outlet is closed until further notice. I need material. Moving at my own pace here. Pandemic obstacles and all. Just wanted to let my 2 followers know I'm still chipping away.

BTW, does anybody know what the orifice in the last pic below, circled in red, is for? My guess is that it was an option for something and should be plugged. Can't figure it out as I tore this thing apart many moons ago.

Your antenna wire

No ****. Thanks.
My question is why did they design such an elaborate exit/entry point when a simple hole would have worked fine?

Well, the stamping costs wouldn't have gone up one cent and this way the angle is more in line with the wire path.

Chipping away here.
Got the mating surfaces shot with single stage WW1 today.
The Murano blue pearl test kit should be here Monday from my PPG rep.
Then shooting the let down panels, make a decision, then on to the trunk and engine compartment.
Then re-install the fenders, pull the doors, jamb, then hopefully get the car shot in pearl this summer.

Chipping away here. Got the trunk wrapped up. Moved on to the engine compartment. The original plan was to have the whole car shot before it get's cold out. Ain't happening this year. Cold is coming fast. After putting the hood back on I'll pull the doors (again) and jamb them plus the interior U-1. If I get that done, going into idle mode for the winter. I'm damned tired of working on irregular surfaces.

dang that looks great!!! What color are you spraying? I'm fixing to start on my 70roadrunner and I'm going to paint it a pearl white with ghost blue pearl. I guess that's how I would describe the color. I'm no bodyshop man but on my old 70 I painted lemon twist yellow and shot gray primer. I'm wanting to spray epoxy white primer. Does it block out or is it just the final stage of primer. Congrats on the build and thanks for posting

Thanks Markzx.
PPG Tri coat system.
That's the original W1 White with PPG VM4604 Blue Murano in PPG DBC500 as the inter coat clear.
Murano was used back in the 70s but was discontinued. I shot this car back in 79 with gold Murano and it looked shitty now that I look back at pictures. I was 17 and did my best.
Our local PPG rep is a friend of mine and tipped me off that they just started to make the Murano again. 4 colors, Gold, Silver, Blue and Red. My jobber had to special order it. $100 for 4 oz. The blend I'm using is 4 oz. per gallon of DBC. Keeps it simple. I had to figure that out after shooting 8 let down panels to make a decision. PM me if you want to go that way.
The thing about Murano is that its made out of fish scales rather than ground up oyster shells like most pearls. Only an idiot can stripe Murano, lays down real nice with a slow reducer. Pictures don't do it justice. Have to see it with the eye.

No doubt, got to keep that AM signal flowing on a smooth path.
Seems over engineered to me.
AM signals must pass through a vertical plane on a 45-degree pitch in order to correctly reassemble themselves after such an arduous journey from the transmission towers. :p

BTW...you're lucky...that hole in the sill below the antenna hole is present on your car. My GTX was missing that hole...had to make one myself, in order to clean inside, and get the rust-proofing wax in there. :)

That's a beautiful color!!!!!!! This is the color I've been coming up with in my mind. I think that will look awesome on a 70 with the stripes in the middle. I read that you like the protouring look. Well me too. I think you should do what you like to a car. Barr hacking one up. I was watching a fast and furious movie and they appeared to just destroy more than 1 roadrunner (clone). I yelled at my 80 inch3d tv and almost threw a beer at it

Love the Murano pearls. I disassembled and painted my wife’s brand new ‘86 IROC Camaro with Murano Red over the OEM white and then put it back together with all new decals, it was a beautiful car....

Ok I was going to p.m. you but I don't know how to. I clicked on your avatar and it took me to your page. I think I may have reported you. It said reason for reporting and I was like I'm not trying to report nobody any how. How do I p.m. you. It may not have done that if it does just tell them I'm stupid and my phone is slow and was lagging.
