WHO USES A VPN?

I’ve been considering getting a VPN. I hear about them more and more. A lot of hype? Or a good thing to have?
I’m wondering about speed and any problems people have. Also what service y’all are using.

VPN to where?

All of our senior admin and most of middle admin (and me) use a VPN.

...to work from home (or anywhere else) on our business network.

At home, I can connect to our VPN and work on our servers and switches as if I am in the same building.

Not real sure about what's been advertised as a VPN for general internet connection security.
Can't really understand where they're going.

Thanks, when I listen to ads it seems you have to have one for online banking or general internet surfing. Another monthly payout.

necessary today to protect data. it encryps data to protect you. The issue is the opposite side needs to have one as well. if your talking point to point....

I've used them before. Unless you pay a higher price for a really good one, the speeds can be slow.

It's supposed to encrypt your information or hide your browsing. They are good if you use public networks to do your banking. Or if you want to hide your internet browsing from you internet provider.

I never heard of it until the pandemic and my work gave me laptop and vpn to work from home. Before I always had a desk top in my office at work and at home.

Ask your IT department if you're working from home.
It is essentially a secure "pipe" to the home network.

I highly recommend using one. I had one for 15 years at work, and now that I'm retired, I pay for one on my own. I just NORD VPN and am very happy with their product.

I have a VPN with my Norton 360. It can be turned on/off. It generates a new IP address temporarily so that the scammers, don't get your real IP address. As I understand it. Seems to direct a lot of spmmers to a wrong address. Hope it is really working. Sometimes does slow things down a little. But ???

I use Proton VPN, when I do use one. I also use their email service. Did a lot of research, but I feel confident in their security. Never can be too careful these days.

So, what does a non-work network VPN connect to on the other end.

If you are working from home and need to use network resources located at your place of business, your employer should provide you with their VPN client and configuration.

A caveat is that while connected, it effectively locks out the actual network you are on, meaning the browser and any network printer or file storage you may have locally, won't work.

I just saw the nord commercial last night and it appeared that the user was on a tablet in a free wifi area at a coffee shop and may have been connecting to his desktop at home.

Kind of an odd situation IMO.

I simply do not use public free wifi unless absolutely necessary and then usually only on my phone which is natively a much more robust operating system to hack. I also do not directly access any of my financial institution sites while on public wifi. If I need to do that I go through my phone carrier, but I can't remember the last time I needed to do that.
