I bought this Accel brand coil online about a year ago. I doubt i still have the email receipt. Or if it would do me any good, after this long. Though i still had the box. I painted it black, to look stock, and mounted it horizontally in the stock location. Today, i happened to notice an oil puddle on my intake. This thing is leaking, and i haven't even fired the motor up yet. Is this just luck of the draw, for crap made in china, or is this common for this particular coil ?

Accel used to be made in Japan. Made in China these days?
I have an Accel chrome coil like yours that has worked since the mid '90s.

The cheapness of products today is disgusting. As technology evolves, so should the reliability of products. It is going in the opposite direction. I would guess Accel makes a lot products in China.

My Supercoil from the 1970s still isn't leaking. The new ones still say Made in U.S.A.

However they, and your model 8145 that is shown only has a 90 day warranty on Holley's website.

Your sticker with the 2012 copyright means it must be from before Holley took over the group in 2015. Maybe it was old when you got it?

It must have been. Good eye, i didn't notice that.

I have seen a few coils that leak over the years. My own MSD started to leak and same as you noticed a small puddle of oil on the back of the inlet manifold.
That coil had been fine for years and suddenly started leaking.
Just luck of the draw I think.

I think I'll make a template up so I can just paste it in here for problems like this:
I'm constantly dismayed with the quality of products these days.
It seems like everything is cheap and barely adequate when new.
Even the higher priced items are junk compared to the general quality of stuff when I was a kid.

A.couple years back HotRod did an exposee on counterfeit parts, primarily sold over the internet. Auto meter, msd, aeromotive and others were mentioned. I don't think accel was making parts in China then. If it is a counterfeit , I'm surprised they admitted it on the box. The counterfeits mentioned by HotRod sure didnt.

If it’s leaking it’s no good now cause it will overheat. But it may have a screw in the tower that is loose and u may be able to tighten it. Kim

oil filled coils can leak 2 ways the 1. there is on some coils a screw down in the tower look if you see oil in there try and tighten the screw . remove the screw and see if the seal can be fixed might be tricky but i have done this. the oil keeps the coil cool with out it would short out internal. 2 rust if the coil rust and leak no fix for that replace it. one thing i and you can do use a piece of rubber and install under clamp as not show if need be for show. coils mounted on the engine get a lot of vibration and will loosen the screw . mount on the side of fender well will stop this problem .

Aftermarket roll of the dice.. The only coil I've ever had leak was an MSD. It leaked around the circumference of the top where it meets the metal canister. It was even mounted vertically--which is funny because that's the way people say to "mount them or they'll leak"...never had a horizontally-mounted coil of any brand leak. I have also had factory Chrysler coils die on me...However, it's GOOD luck that your Accel was crap out of the box and didn't leave you stranded somewhere! (I personally have one of those yellow cans in the trunk as a spare, and I've had to use it..)

The coil in my Charger is probably from around 1989, one of the first parts I upgraded on the car.
Accel Chrome Super Coil.
I guess they made good stuff back then.

The only things you can trust are the body & drivetrain. They were made in the good ole USA !!

Oddly have original coil on 69rr but this May saw oil in tower so replaced. At one point in time coils were made somewhat better.

I have seen where the install sheet for MSD coils IIRC said that it had to be installed vertically due to leaking. Not saying this is the case, but always possible.
