Hello,
Looking for some help. Rebuilding a 440. Comp cam, erson 1.6 roller rockers. In switching to Comp hydraulic roller rockers they were about 1/4" taller than the original hydraulic lifters. Got longer pushrods from Smith Brothers. In setting up and adjusting the rockers, all good. Next time through started seeing readjustments necessary. Pulled the lifters and several were either partially collapsed or cocked. Noticed the box cam kind of beat of the lifter came in and only one set had the blue fish net wrap.
Thank you in advance for any help.

we are using howard's , in your 440 roller build . my cam grinder got them . no beat up box here .

Sounds like something that got returned and shipped back out without inspection.

Where did you buy them?

You said your new lifters were taller than the originals, so you bought new longer pushrods, is this correct? If so, that's likely the problem. You needed shorter pushrods..

No bought shorter, measured the difference in the lifters and adjusted.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. I'd take them apart and give them a looky and a thorough cleaning. Maybe some debris got in there and is messing with their ability to pressurize..

Sorry to say but I had the same problem with Comp lifters. Fired the engine for break in and 4 lifters failed. Removed and take apart and found nothing. Cleaned, reassemble, install and fired the car, same 4 failed. Ordered Lunati lifters with the snap ring instead of the wire retainer and problem solved. I read about Comp failures more each day.

What part number lifters did you buy?

Sounds like you should have your friend get you another set, and send the ones you have back.

It’s not totally clear to me, but I think the OP is using hyd roller lifters.
On many(most?) retrofit hyd rollers you can’t get the plunger out past the link bar attaching hardware.

I have seen the plungers get stuck in the lifter body on a few different brands of hyd roller lifters.
Although, I don’t recall having it ever happen before the engine has been fired.

The statement in post #1 says roller rockers.Maybe you are correct they meant it was to say lifters.

I had a bunch of Comp hydraulic lifters fail. I took the failed lifters apart to see what was going on. There's a shim in the bottom of the lifter that acts as a one way valve to stop the lifter collapsing and it had shattered into small pieces in each of the lifters. Junk.
Just to be clear these were hydraulic roller lifters.

I’ve got a set of comp cams solid roller lifters (the older USA made ones) for a small
Block ford max effort drag race engine that I’m building at present.
They are going in a brand new Dart block. When we measured lifter to bore clearance, we were at .0025. The comp cams lifters are going on eBay!
I’m ordering a set of BAM lifters.
I’m posting this because it’s just another example of comp cams stuff being insufficient in one way or another.
