Ok I feel a plastic post behind one side possibly for alignment as I don’t feel a nut on it. How does one remove this (expensive I am sure) chrome plastic plate without cracking it? I know I have to remove the remote mirror retainer ring. The passenger side does not have that but is also well mounted and tight some how.

Actually you have to get under the molding from the bottom and release the small arm, then you can use that little arm to turn the butterfly and release the molding.

I removed mine without damage. I went from the inside with pliers and slightly compressed the clip the pushed through the door and they came off. You need to be very careful, I don’t believe the clips can be bought.

That trim piece is aluminum so it won’t take very much prying before you damage it.

So is this chrome piece plastic?

Yes be very careful with the clips. I found that two of mine were already broken inside probably due to being pried off in the past. As R413 said you compress the clips from the inside and then push them out. Don’t pry the trim piece. I actually made a couple of clips for mine because i couldn’t get hold of enough. Not as good as the originals but they hold the trim on ok. I think there should be four from memory on each side.

I just had a look at the pic above. 5 clips either side looks better. I think i put 4 because i didn’t have enough. Making them is very fiddly.

Thanks guys
