I'm looking to add an aftermarket tach to my charger. I want one that's small and in a inconspicuous location. Any suggestions? Brand, type, mounting location?

I used a 2" six grand tach from autometer (autogage line) and mounted it to the extreme left of the instrument cluster, in my dually. Very low rpm power band, the itty bitty tach worked fine. Basically, it was mounted as close to the drivers side windshield post as i could get it. I had put one in a similar place in my 57, so i used the idea again.
Edit: it might have been 2 5/8. I think it was sized to fit in the aftermarket gauge pods to put on the windshield post.

Suggest you save your cash, what’s the point of a small tach in a place you can’t see it?

Lol good point. I have a 5" Autometer worm clamped to my steering column, as much as I know that annoys some of you guys. Ultimately I plan to re-do my gauge cluster and have a 'tach mounted in the gauge cluster. The 'tach on the column was cool when I was in college, not so much now...

Doesn’t annoy me. :)

Autometer

Found it on ebay in $90 maybe 8 or 9 years ago.

It is available in 4, 5 and 6K too on same Z series.

I installed down the dash frame underneath the ashtray on my 74. When I find a decent pic will post.

After get that one, found there was a better suited font with the cluster font Also from autometer but can't recall which one was. I think it was even smaller!

found a pic... I the pic was showing my recently installed new repro tuff wheel, so that's why is focused there, but you can see the tach there. Its facing up to the driver. Not too much light anyway and pic was taken with an old Nokia 6275 LOL

A discrete place. Being auto car, that place is quite enough to just look at it for some references. I didn't have to drill holes, used already existing ones

The advantage of the 2 1/16" size is they offer this pod

https://www.autometer.com/universal-triple-2-1-16-dash-pod.html

Which I could use to fit down the dash or over the console ( like the cassette player used to be on 3rd gens ) and get the tach, a booster/vacuum gauge and some other... maybe voltimeter or some oil temp ( eng or tran ). Just would modify the front plate to face them to driver location.

The shape smooths out to those locations very well.

I bought a retro Mopar tach made by Autometer from Summit Racing. Not cheap but it was $60 off list. I just got it and plan to mount it on the transmission tunnel. It’s large enough to see down there. It looks very appropriate for a ‘60’s/‘70’s Mopar.

If you just want a little tach for nostalgic reason,,,,,cool.
If it will used for shifting skip the tach and use a shift light!!:moparsmiley::)

I have a Bosch tac that is dirt cheap and works pretty well. You can modify the case and remove the bezele to integrate into the dash to get a look closer to the stock gauges. I made a mount and swapped out my broken clock for the tac. Assuming you have a clock in your dash, you could do the same thing and you can swap back of you want to go back to OE. As a bonus you don't feel bad about cutting up a brand new $200 Autometer gauge.

Back in the day, we'd strap a Sun Super Tach on the steering column. The originals had a separate control box, you can get a modern replica which doesn't need a separate box. I have a modern one in my car, still have an ancient original one up on my garage shelf.

I like AutoMeter, for their great customer service as well as a good product. I use the 3-3/4" 'street tach' model. When I first got it I f---d around and cracked the glass(don't ask lol). After almost a year of use I got the idea to contact them about repairing it, which I was willing to pay for....they wouldn't have it. They told me to ship it to them (cost me 9 bucks) they repaired it and shipped it back, all for free. I had it back in the car 2 weeks after sending it in.

Love those!
