I'm considering buying a 727 transmission that originally was in a truck with a 383. I want to use it in my 66 Satellite that has a 440. Does anyone know what the difference between the truck and car transmissions?

What kind of truck? If it was something that was ordered for hd service it may have 4 pinion planetaries, higher ratio kickdown band apply arm and an added clutch in the front drum. Check tailshaft length to suit your app.

Which year truck is it out of? I think the input shaft splines changed in '67. You'll want the later models as they offer a better selection of aftermarket converters.

All I know about the truck I got from the part number on the transmission. It is for a 1970 D100 or D200 with a 383 and has the long extension.

Should be a very good trans if the tailshaft is the right length, as mentioned. The throttle pressure linkage is a different height between low blocks and raised blocks, so you'll have to sort that. Check the casting around the crossmember mount, there were a few changes. Most important - find the date code and verify the year, a couple things change at 71 and newer.

Some truck 727's didn't have the two bumps on the bottom of the tail for the floor shift bracket. If it's going in a column shift car, no worry.

The governor is probably set for fairly low auto shift RPM. Other than that you should be good.

A&A Trans sells governor weights for various rpm's.

Back in the day I ground the outer weight with a bench grinder and drilled the center weight. Actually worked OK.

Be careful of how the shift linkage mounts. I tried putting a pick-up trans in my '77 Newport with a 400 and the column shift linkage wouldn't mount up.

You will have to use a newer torque converter, Your 66 727 torque converter takes a 19 spline input shaft, 67 and newer 727 have 24 spline input shaft.

switch to the later drum and shaft
don't look back
much easier converter selection and a stronger shaft
same with your lifters and pushrods- use later
but different from the trans spline and converter
you can mismatch the lifters and pushrods
