Hey!
I hope that everyone is safe!
I have a 69 Road Runner.... it was originally an Ivy Green interior, and evidently painted black, with the green starting to show through.
I’d like to paint (repaint) the dash pads black.....
Is it a huge project to remove and replace the dash pads?
Thanks!!!!

It sure is! The nuts are up inside the dash frame on the upper. The lowers are inside as well but not as hard to get to. Pretty much disassemble the dash to get to all of them and hope your good at working on your head upside down. It would be best if you pull the front seat or seats depending on bench or buckets.

Its not that bad... I've done many and just done one on a RR. There are 5 nuts on the backside. Maybe 6?? Can't remember...Get a long extension. Or put several extensions together it will have to be pretty long. You should be able to feel around with the edge of the socket where they are. The tricky part is getting the nuts started once you have the new pad in. I believe it was a 7/16 socket?? You'll be fine. Just take your time.

I did my 69 Roadrunner this winter, sitting on the bench seat. Exact same problem as you described: green showing through black spray job done at some point in the past.

Removed the instrument cluster, glove box and door, heater controls, defrost ducts and radio. Worked through the openings. Mostly used a deep wheel socket, 1/4" drive extension and small ratchet. One stud was a bit easier with one of those spring type flexible shaft driver tools, but not absolutely necessary. I used a little bit of wheel bearing grease on the socket to hold the nut when re-installing them. You'll want to wear long sleeve shirt and gloves if you can, as I was constantly nicking myself on all the sharp edges. You can use a small vanity mirror and flashlight to look back into the dash cavity to locate the nuts. They were symmetrically placed so once you locate the first couple the rest are easier.

I switched mine out to a nicer pad rather than repaint it. The whole job took me about 2 1/2-3 hrs. I'd been dreading it for a long time and was pleasantly surprised how it went.

I have my entire dash out so its pretty easy for me. Some things to note:
The nuts are actually speed-nuts so pretty easy to get off.
The spacing is uniform, but you gotta find the first one. The pics attached might help.

Good luck
