I just started to go thru and clean up another 850 dp, 4781-3. It clearly hasn't been touched before, because I only got as far as getting the bowl screws out. This thing has never had the bowls off, probably because no-one can GET them off. I tried a light blow with a soft screwdriver handle, then a little harder blow, then a soft hammer, then a giant screwdriver as a pry bar between the carb base and the accelerator pumps. Absolutely nothing moved.
If I didn't know better, I would say they were welded on!
Do any of you carb gurus have a good technique to get this welded together carb apart? I decided to ask for help before I went for the crowbar and the torch.

Sounds like my 750 I did last year. Wood block on top and a BFH ! Then the metering block I thought was bonded on as well. Then needed a spray can of gasket remover and a HD plastic scraper to get the gasket off...

I've done quite a few, usually a screwdriver at the top catching first the edge of the float bowl and pry against the surface where the air cleaner sits... Second use the same location to pry on the metering block....

I agree with the gasket remover & the plastic scraper... Unfortunately it usually removes the dichromate plating... So try to limit how much you use & try to keep it off the most visible areas if possible...

Also an ultrasonic parts washer helps tremendously...

That's ugly as sin, dad, and I'm sure mine is gonna look just like that. I'm no longer looking forward to this job.

My "utrasonic cleaner"...

Awesome.... Is that a diaphragm type compressor? If so 33 imp needs to find a bigger container & put the whole carb in it before you attempt to tear it apart... Nothing to loose & it might actually work pretty well.

I heard if you spray the gaskets with wd-40 they wont stick to the aluminum.

I have good non-stick gaskets for the re-assembly. I re-did a gold claw a few weeks ago that had been sitting for at least five years, and it almost fell apart, disassembly was so easy. I even reused the five year old bowl and metering block gaskets.
The problem with this one is the original Holley gaskets weren't non stick, and this thing is welded together, even though I drained it the last time it was used.

It's just a cheap oilless compressor, I rarely use it as I can't stand the noise and I have a 10HP out in the hangar piped from there over the 60' into the shop... so shop is silent.
