Color Dying for Seat Belt Restoration

I'm going to try to restore the original belts from my '63. Has anyone done any color dying to these, or know someone that does this ? I remember many years ago, seeing RID Dyes for sale in stores, or markets. I should also add, that I would be interested if anyone had a Very Nice set available, in this Turquoise color. Any and All info appreciated, Thanks...

Don't think dyeing them will work. Think material is nylon and won't absorb dye. Good luck hope I'm wrong. Try a junk belt first.

I tried dyeing a set, from a light color to black. First i thoroughly cleaned them. Then used Ritz dye & hot water. It worked, but not very well. Then i sprayed them with Sem color coat. It made them darker, but left them feeling stiff, not flexible as original.

I have a bottle of Rit dye in my hand and nylon capability is right on the label. My wife thinks they make a turquoise color.

I think there is a member on here that restores them but dont know if he dyes them in his resto process.Ive seen on numerours threads here in peoples restros on dying there seat belts with good results.

On my Black Belts, I needed to "spruce" them up a bit. So, as mentioned above, I cleaned, no wrong, my wife cleaned the you know what out of them. Then I sprayed them lightly with Duple-Color Vinyl and Fabric Speciality Coating. I use the HVP106, Flat Black for my belts and other interior parts. Dupli-Color has some interesting videos on their site about the product, if you are interested. Here is the Can.

I do not know if they have it in that color, but you might check. If it works for Seats, it might just work for the seat belts. Good luck. B.

Thanks for the Lead, I will check them out. I also did a search for the dye, that Mike mentioned, Rit, and they are supposed to sell it at our local supermarkets. I even went to there sight, and found a few formulas to mix a close color shade, so I have something to work on possibly, until it stops snowing up this way...

I thought belts were solution dyed during the manufacturing of the nylon itself. Rit dye is surface dye on nylon as it doesn't penetrate plastic fibers very well. But things change maybe some new dyes available now. Keep us posted.
