I have a 2014 5.7 Hemi engine from a wrecked Charger police car. It has 33k miles on it. I have two Chargers that I am considering using the engine for.

The first Charger is my white 73 ,which has a 318 4 barrel in it.the second Charger is a 68 318 car, that I am going to put together for my son. I use the 73 as a three season driver, and I assume that my son will do the same. Would I be better off to put the modern engine in his car,so it would have modern reliability for him,or use the 400 b engine that I had slated for his car,and put the modern engine in the 73 Charger? Which way would you go with it?

Neither... To me the 5.7 only belongs in the newer cars. I understand everyone is putting an LS, Coyote or 3rd Gen Hemi in everything these days. Old school American iron needs to stay old school. Maybe upgrade to f.i. all hidden under stock air cleaner.

I have a 12' Challenger R/T 6spd. While I love the new car for it's comfort, speed, quite it's just not the same great feelings I get from the old classic cars.

Do what makes you happy and considering your doing this with your son a great bonding opportunity use the modern engine for him. Us old buzzards dont need the new stuff anyway.

I would recommend the 400 go in the 68 Charger since no change or mods to k-member and plenty of factory big block motor mounts for it. I would put the 5.7 in the 73 since I believe unless it has a big block k-member it will require custom mounts or modified k-member which isn't that big of a deal also the biggie here is the 73 has more room in the tunnel for a modern OD transmission to fit where as the 68 is very limited what you can do without major surgery in the tunnel area, so I would think the modern hemi with an overdrive would be less work in the 73.

Is your son mechanically inclined? The 5.7 will be good in either car, in fact I would say both (meaning go and get another 5.7). Modern reliability and drivability in an old school skin.

I want these swap for my Coronet, for me, go with the 68 charger, it would be a nice reliable driver, good fuel economy in
the best looking b body, (imo) get the best of both worlds, in a nice car.

Not into modern engines in old cars. Just my 2 cents.

I would put the new Hemi into the 68 because I'm just partial to 2nd gens. But, if you're not going to drive the 68, put the engine into your car so that you can enjoy it.

As for putting newer engines into older cars, I appreciate the technological superiority of newer engines but they just dont sound right in an older car. I'm told that modern mopars, like the Hellcats, have special tuning to make them sound lumpy and old school at idle; because they want to emulate the choppy idle of 60's engines. Even if I had the money I would keep my 440 in my 69...

This is the 73 Charger

Unfortunately I only have one photo with the 68 Charger in it. It can be seen slightly in the right corner of this photo.

Just like the question do I put mustard on that or ketchup. There is no right or wrong, it's all a matter of personal taste. The same with your motor.

Too much hassle to put GEN III into old iron.. Sure can be done but at what cost and then you should put in a 6.4...
