A new problem rears it's head. What's happening is a momentary grinding/scraping sort of noise, ONLY under hard throttle. Driving normally it doesn't happen. If I leave with normal throttle, and then start to get on it hard after I'm moving, it does it. Cruising along at, say, 45mph and I womp on it, it might do it for the initial moment of loading the engine/drivetrain but then it goes away. It seems like I can feel it a little as well as hear it..
I can't tell where it's coming from, but it soes seem to originate from the front or middle of the car, not the rear. It doesn't do it any other time except when there's a quick loading of the drivetrain. Drivin' me crazy (short drive LOL).
Plugs don't seem to show signs of detonation, at least nothing obvious. U-joints all seem okay, but? Converter? Trans(Lord please no)?
I do use a pinion snubber that lives about 1/2" off the floor, so I don't see it being caused by a pinion angle/wrap-up problem. Okay thanks for any ideas!

Check your bell housing bolts, had this issue with a 440 in a Challenger and ignored it and then cracked the bell housing. The noise was coming from the TC moving and hitting the bell housing just for a moment.

I agree that the trans mount might be bad or loose as well.

Yo! Just drop it off at my place.......I’ll find out, one way or the other what the problem WAS! Lol!

Check the above mentioned and let us know what ya find.

Could be a motor mount as well.... Can you duplicate the noise by power braking the car? IE step hard on the brake & bring in some throttle.... Often you can and if you can pop the hood & try it while watching the engine...

Tires not warrantied and don't check the mileage before I drop it off, right?:D
If/when I figure it out I'll definitely follow up.

That's a good check I haven't tried yet.
I actually haven't done too much investigating yet, I planned to dig into it this weekend...but this is exactly what I was looking for, some ideas of places to start to save some time!
Thanks guys

Might check for 'witness' marks on the floor above the front u-joint. Is the clearance tight there?

It's not super tight, but what I do have there is bolts for the shifter sticking through the tunnel. Only long enough to get nuts on, but ya never know...I'll be checking that. I though I might dab some grease or something in there before taking it for a drive..

fan hitting the shroud if you have one/
Thanks, but I've had that happen before and this is a much more pronounced metallic sound.

It only appears to happen for the moment(s) when there's enough torque applied to cause the chassis to lift/react. Thus I'm not ruling out something in the suspension travel....but dammit I woke up and can't turn my head (old neck injury) without intense pain so further diagnosis is gonna have to wait..

That's more important than the car, hopefully that will get better soon.

What happened to me before was that the driver side header started touching the steering column just by a hair when launching hard and caused a strange noise and obviously could feel it as well.
After a long search i noticed the contact markings on header and steering column, guess this was due to old engine rubber mounts.
Dunno if you have headers though...

Sorry for the late follow-up guys, I forgot about this thread...but I have a busted DS engine mount. Which I didn't want to believe, because I put "mity-mounts" in last year. (They're the ones with the bolts that go all the way through the isolator). I noticed more movement than I wanted to see when revving in park, so I crawled underneath and jacked up the driver side of the engine. The top plate of the mount completely separated from the rubber and bottom plate. I could jack up the engine until the header tube hit the passenger side fenderwell:BangHead:.
So much for the "un"mity mounts.......

Good thing you find the cause.
Not so good is that i just used the same mounts for my engine....:praying:
Silently hoping you are running a 600hp monster....lol

Haha not quite...475hp neighborhood. Oh well. I'm slipping a chain on there for now, this engine's time is short anyway as I expect to be pulling it for my 505 in the next month or so. I'll be using solid mounts for that...at least on the driver side!

Welp

Nice quiet evening so I decided to just pull out the dead mount. I had a stock-style one in good shape... I'm putting it in so any possible Sunday morning coffee and/or pastry run won't be hindered. Maybe the old bailing wire trick for reinforcement. Hell it only needs to last a couple of weeks...I'll be gentle on it:rolleyes:

These 2 allen bolts are the limiters for stretch right?
And they are sheared off....wow.
