Whatever happened to front wheel bearing maintenance?

Chilton's is the more well known.

Motor's is far better IMO.

Chiltons are pretty much worthless and can get the unfamiliar in real trouble. Reading through them you recognise pictures from FSMs and random pics from who knows where. The descriptions and text are general and also copied from different sources. All put together by data processing.

Factor Service Manuals and Motor Manuals are the best but there's some mistakes in them also, especially torque specs.

WTH is that??? LOL...

These are aluminum & work well..View attachment 942795
Exactly. A bearing race and seal driver. I sold scads of them on the MAC Tool truck. BRD129ma if I remember right. Nicely machined aluminum so as not to damage the race. The proper tool works guys. That's what the pros use!

Packing the bearings is a greasy job but I'm not skeered of it!
I just need to know how far in to drive the race.

I would tend to agree.

Somewhere in the 80's most went to some sort of sealed bearing.
In the 80's, about the time when front wheel drive vehicles were gaining popularity, SKF developed a self lubricating duplex angular contact ball bearings for FWD cars. This bearing had a semi porous oil impregnated ball separator that kept the rolling elements seperated and lubricated when the bearing was turning and re-absorbed the lubricant when stopped. The bearing was sealed to prevent dirt and moisture from entering. Later, other manufacturers adopted similar technology.

Always replace the races when you replace a tapered bearing. Always. Not really an option. Modern FWD bearings from about the 80 to present were just R&R. Not serviceable. No adjustments needed during vehicle assembly. Every thing that used to require a skill for install and adjustment on the production lines have been redesigned to use just calibrated pneumatic tools. No skill required.
