Guys,
Anybody order a driveshaft thru Strange?
I'm putting a Dana in my car and will need a new driveshaft. I'm looking for input or opinions from anybody else who has ordered one from Strange.

When you fill out the order form it asks for a dimension from the trans tail housing to the center of the diff u-joint, question is - I don't have the pinion angle set yet so at what position do I point the diff for the measurement? Strange told me on the phone to set the diff pinion opposite the trans angle - ex: if trans angle is 2 degrees down, point the diff 2 degrees up. This make no sense to me because Caltracs require the pinion to be 4 degrees down in relation to the shaft. Perhaps I misunderstood?

Any input appreciated.

When I was building my Dana for my 67, Cass at Dr. Diff gave me these instructions for doing it out of the car.

put an angle finder on the pinion yoke and a bubble level on the spring perches.

Set the housing UPSIDE DOWN on jack stands. Put a floor jack under the yoke to set the pinion 4 degrees DOWNWARD (towards the ground).

Level the perches at 44" on center and weld.”

I too need to order a driveshaft, any idea how long strange takes to build?

I have bought 3 Strange driveshafts and been very happy with them. I went through Cass on all of them.

I bought mine through Dr. Diff as well. They are available from Summit a little cheaper.

I ordered the 1350 joints.

I run mine with 4° pinion angle as I recall. Measuring wasn't a big deal for me as I was replacing and upgrading from an existing shaft.

It took less than a week from the time I ordered as I recall.

I also purchased a driveshaft through strange, 1350 u joints and billet trans yoke. It was out the door to me in a day. My diff was in place already, it had approximately 4 degrees negative angle, which means that the pinion was pointing downward and forward. I filled the sheet in and sent it back to them. I probably still have a copy on my laptop.

If you are swapping from a 8 3/4 to a Dana? It may need a new shaft. Depends how long the old one was. If it was a touch short it may still fit. Pinion angle between the perch and pinion center line usually has the nose of the pinion 4 degrees up from the perch. Where the perch sets on the leaf springs is not level to the ground. The leaf springs are angled down towards the front. If the housing is at the 4 degree range the pinion will usually be about 1 1/2 degrees down when its all bolted up at ride height. Couple that with a trans angle that is probably 2 1/2 degrees up (engine balancer higher than trans output). That gives you about 4 degrees down on the pinion overall. These guys offer some pretty good prices. https://pstds.com/
The ad in National Dragster says free shipping.

Dennys driveshaft just told me 5-weeks

Wow, that 's not normal. 1 day at Strange and they had mine on the truck. Perhaps the covid crap is the problem.

The problem I have is how do I approximate the pinion angle when I have no shaft to base the angle from?

I really appreciate all the input guys!

I recently downloaded an angle finder app on my iPad and used it to measure my pinion angle. It was spot on. I put my iPad on the flats of the pinion yoke. Keep in mind my diff is upside down in the pic with the perches level to the ground. It’s pointing 4 degrees nose down. From 90. So when it’s installed, it’s 4 degrees nose up in relation to the perches per DR Diff.

I use an angle finder app on my phone too.

Dyna-Tech for drive shafts, I went with an aluminum shaft, larger u-joints & love it, 650hp @ rear wheels, 9" slicks, MP aluminum 742 housing. Don't guess at pinion angle KNOW for sure, set up a GoPro to view pinion & shaft while under motion, full load launch & WOT when crossing traps, the angle changes, you will see the difference & then experiment with different shims.

I called Dr Diff last Monday and my new Driveshaft from Strange shipped that Friday. It’s being delivered UPS Tuesday so just over a week to my door.

In Vegas, I would use Dan's Driveline off of Rancho. They did a one piece 5" aluminum driveshaft for my Dodge Cummins in an afternoon. Remove, build, install, a little over $500.
