Since my motor's such a oddball combo I'm going to need a custom cam and want to go solid roller.
I was thinking Racer Brown since i'm already in Maryland, and from reading about them in my Mopar Performance SA guide from 1978. Does anyone have experience with them?

this is 1 of 4 cam makers i just called in the last 2 month and wasn't happy with the input i got from them as i will be running a pro-flow 4 and wanted to see how each company would recommend the style of cam profile. i went with crane cams a 1 off grind for my engine.

The Chrysler Engineering Daytona #88 ran a Racer Brown cam when it set the 200 mph record by Buddy Baker at Talladega, March 24th. , 1970.

I've always used RB cams with no issues & Jim is a really nice guy to work with who wouldn't lead you down the wrong path.

racer brown has been sold and they dont seem to want to hear what a customers wants now. my first 2 440 had a 488 292 cam but they dont have that cam available now that i was told.so what was and now we have to be wise on who we trust any more.

Jim is great to deal with and will not steer you wrong. There is a Racer Brown regrind in my Charger.

Don't know who you been talking to but Jim has always made anything I ever asked for.

I live in Md and know Jim as I see him at car shows and at the track sometimes. Seems to be a very nice guy. Myself I have not used his cams but many seem to like them. I heard one time that a lot of his cams are speced close to the MP cams but he changes them a little. Course if you get a custom cam that will be different of course as it should be modded for your combo. I also hear to call Jim after 2 pm in the afternoon as he don't answer the phone until after 2 as I believe he works all morning. I am not sure how many if any others work for Jim as I never asked him but I believe he does all the cam grinding himself. Ron

we have used racer brown for years with all our solid lift cams. went to roller cams the last 3 motors. if jim is in business he WILL NOT steer you wrong.

I haven't used a RB cam before, but used to hear good things about them. I would also look at Bullet cams or Lunati and get an old grind of Harold Brookshire. Harold was the best in the business before his passing. Just call Bullet, talk to Tim and tell him you want one of Harolds old grinds for your application and that will be the best you can do IMO. Look up his old posts under UD Harold. He was the owner of Ultradyne and now bullet has it and all his old grinds. Harold was the genius in cam grinding. He holds his intake valves closed longer and gets them open quickly and getting then closed again quickly and same on exhaust, packing the cylinder as full as possible, then exhausting it completely without killing the valve train.

Yeah, It needs to be a custom cam because the motor is a really oddball combo. 383 bored .30 over with TRW 12-1 domed pistons, 915 closed chamber heads, a Weiand tunnel ram, and 4.11 gears in the rear end. I want also want it to be a roller cam. I will run It on the street with a E85 conversion. :usflag:

that's not all that strange of a combo
a little off the norm, but a good cam engineer could help

the org. 292* dur./0.509" gross valve lift, hydr. flat tappet
or IIRC the 302* dur./0.557" gross valve lift, solid flat tappet
Racer Brown cams for MoPar's, was the ****, 40 years ago,
a lot like the MP purple shaft, "allegedly" patterned after that spec. cams
when they were still in LA, org. ownership, all of are ol' school cam tech.
I think they also use to have a great "Mushroom lifter" grind cam too
don't remember the spec.'s, it was wild, it was supposedly a great grind too...

I can't help ya' sorry...
I don't know of anyone using a Racer Brown Cam competitively,
solid, roller or otherwise, MoPar wedge or otherwise, making real power
in the past 2+ or more decades...

They may be great...

There are a few racers using Racer Brown cams. Not a lot. Jim can still grind mushroom lifter cams. last I heard, finding the lifters was getting more difficult. And yes, Jim still does all the grinding himself.

My General Kinetics mushroom cam is the best I had. Still on the shelf. I'm really tempted to put it in my 512. Haven't heard about any one using Racer Brown for years. They sure were a "hot tip" back in the day. I'd trust them.

A lot of the older race teams are still using Racer Brown cams and still winning races.

I almost bought my cam cam from Racer Brown. I ended up with Crane because that's what was in the motor before.
To be honest I wish I would have bought the Racer Brown.

Back in 1968 I had a Racer Brown hydraulic cam in my Street Hemi. It was bought right over the MoPar parts counter. It was great. More power through out the RPM range. In fact, rev to 7000 with no problem. Unfortunately, sold the Ply in 1974.
