727 sat outside, rebuild?

Test it before pulling apart for clues and to learn the drill
even 3 planetaries are usually strong enough
I've had thrust washers go south
especially in an overdrive unit
I used the straight cut diesel gears when rebuilding mine (actually the dealer rebuilt it to my specs under warranty)
The It went to TRANSGO and the OD reprogramming kit appeared about a month and lots of trans R&R later
250 thou miles later and no problems but I have had "back to low" but no "back to second"
New seperator plate from Transgo will fix that "real soon now" and I'm going to put a check ball back into the valve body for the "too harsh shifts into gear" without it

This is my first time opening a transmission. What rebuild kit should I be looking to use from transpartsonline? They seem to have many "rebuild kits" all with additional or different components. Also if I go with a deeper pan do I need a filter extension?

Get a service manual at mymopar.com, if your like me I'd print it. Read trans section front to back before starting. Check input shaft end before start and tighten front band down before pump housing. That way it doesn't fall apart. DVW post #19 for parts.
Yes you need a filter extension with a deep pan.

and you do not need / want a deep pan unless jeep or pickup or wheelstands
you can pick up an atg manual

Ok, so work has been keeping me from knocking this whole thing out. I am about to place the order for parts on transnet but wanted to know if I needed a new direct drum. The one i have seems like some band material delaminated onto this one and rusted it. Itbis enough to hang a fingernail up on . Does the drum need to be smooth?

I am located in Bakersfield, what would they typically charge to turn these? It looks like replacements can be had for $67?

I have a few narrow bushing drums in nice shape. $25 plus shipping.

In that case do you have any rear drums as well? the rear looks like it took a beating as well. Can you sand blast these with a mild abrasive like crushed glass?

In an all out application the wide bushing is probably better. That being said I've never had trouble with a narrow bushing set up. The reaction shaft supports are starting to get scarce for the wide bushing. Therefore pricey. You can also swap to the 3 ring reaction shaft (non lock up only). But then you need a 3 ring input shaft as well. I'd just run the narrow bushing in this case.
