I took it to be chemically dipped! Guaranteed rust free. Now I'm going to lead any dents. Wish I had known about this process sooner.

Thats not cheating, thats doing it rite the first time.Nice results

I like it.What's next to protect the hidden areas from forming rust? What are you going to do to stop flash rust on everything else?

Does that dip process remove the dum-dum between the panels that prevent drumming, and can you get in there to replace it?
Nice job by the way!

I'm pretty sure the dip process is into a hot, caustic bath. The only thing that will remain is the steel. Rust and everything else will be g-o-n-e!

They apply a rust prohibitor that is good for about 30 days, just don't get it wet because it will wash off. After I lead it, I'm going to get it E coated.

Good question - I'll have to ask the restoration guy who told me about chemical cleaning. I will replace the sealer around the inside edge and the rubber bumpers.

What was the cost to do that one panel?

It was $155 plus $10 for the EPA KMA tax. What was really nice is they told me 5 - 7 business days and that's how long it took. Can't wait to take a full shell to them. I dropped another deck lid off when I picked this one up because I want to make sure it doesn't get any worse and if I need to fix something I'll be able to do it in advance.

I also had them do a headlight frame. It was in really good shape but wanted to start it's new life with clean metal to paint on. I didn't want to have to strip something that intricate. $55.

I watched a video on stripping paint off of car panels and tried that before I knew about this process. It was going to take forever and there was the question about how I was going to stop the rust inside. So this was worth every penny in my opinion. Just FYI, Aircraft Remover is about $50 a gallon and you can blow through that easy. It also has been dumbed down by the EPA and doesn't work real well.

Yep, except bondo. That will still be there. I found a good way to get rid of that is with a propane torch. Cooks it and it will peel right off.

i had my whole car stripped there about 5 years ago if that the american metal in toledo

I hope to do that with the next car. They seem like really nice people even though it is a drive. They turn stuff around pretty quick which is nice.

How did it turn out?

We all have our little secrets, if cheating with a stripper is one of yours, I'm not going to be judgmental, but a word of advice, don't put it out on the internet your wife might see it. The clean deck lid is pure genius, when your wife's trying to figure out where you were when you were with the stripper you can point to the deck lid and say you were working on that. All kidding aside that looks like a nice project you got going there.

Couldn't find this photo earlier. Doing it myself was not working real well and I was concerned about the rust on the inside.

I'm going to take the shell to them when the time comes. I think this is better than getting it blasted, what do you think?
