Back in the day, Where was the gas filler?

Anybody but me have trouble getting the pump hose to reach the center behind the plate fill ?
Some stations hose just make it.

I'll tell you about something that was done with the Beetles back then that was quite scary. I'm thinking it was a aftermarket item and not done by VW but it was a heater, mounted under the dash that ran off the gas in the tank! I kid you not, twelve volt blower with a heat exchanger, using a spark plug to ignite it.
Although it was optional, the catalytic heater was factory installed. Not much different from, and just as safe as a Coleman camping heater. They're not uncommon in some motorhomes as well.

on the VW bug the spare tire pressurized the windshield squirter. no relation to the gas tank. there was no washer pump, just pressure.
Just info

I was thinking a flame thrower would be a handy thing to have. Just kidding. I slipped earlier.

Lol, that was the windshield washer that was pressurised by the spare tire.

Having the gas tank in the front of the car seemed a little scary but I never remember a explosion or fire when a beetle was in a head on, not saying it didn't happen. Now the Ford Pinto was a different situation when rear endedView attachment 950724

Just to keep the memories going for KK! (Hanover,Pa.). He's right on the washer pressure.

Dad's Chevy pick-up trucks always had the fuel tank right behind the bench seat (inside the cab I guess). Cap was right outside the driver's door.

If everyone thinks that old cars were soooo dangerous why do you still drive them? I need a little danger in my life personaly...

More than a few times I've had to move my '63 to get the hose to reach it..

Safety is overrated now-a-days. Not only cars but everything.I wonder how I ever lived for over sixty years.

My future missus took a job at our local Clark station back in the early '70's and got her photo taken in the newspaper similar to one posted - at the time were just out of HS dating on and off and some buddy's gave me a lot of chit about it. Some thought it was neat and others thought terrible to have a gal doing this job saying "no way I'd let my girl friend work at a gas station". I knew the station manager as we were on a bowling team and he said it had been good for business. How times have changed..

Some day ... When I take the Coronet to the gas station I really want to take a pic of the attendant trying to find the filler cap, and when she ask me where it is, my answer would be , I don't know where the God damned thing is , this car belong to my very old grand pa

From the cars in the OPs picture I would guess it was taken in the early 70s, but those prices are from the early 80s.

Late 50s gm products were extremely creative at hiding the filler neck behind tailights, and Ford and mopar did some hiding too. The apocryphal story is the one where the thieves had stolen a 56 chevy, but had to abandon it, cause they couldn't figure out how to put gas in it.

When did "self serve" start?

Mid 70's in my part of OH I'd guess about 25% of stations had a self serve island.

Girl in OP does not look like she is wearing station employee attire.

When I started driving in 1984 gas was 89c.

I remember it was a big deal when it went over a dollar as the analog pumps only read to 99.9c
Some stations simply put a $1 sticker in front of the price dial.

I worked at one of the last full serve only stations in OH in 1987.

I didn't see "everyone" say any such thing....

Y'all still have attendants? Heck, I remember way back in the 80's getting in a fuss with NJ gas station attendants
over who was going to do the pumping on my Super Bee in those days.
I never let 'em touch it. :)
