Hi all,
I have a 440 in my charger and I have always used a mobil one filter (M1-301A) for every oil change and it has worked without a problem. For some reason, this time it would not grab the threads and screw on. I exchanged it thinking that maybe it was a bad filter because the old one still went on fine. Again, the new one would not fit. So I tried a K & N filter (HP-3001) and it did not go on either (won't grab threads). I noticed a little bit of a burr on the first thread so I got a die and ran it back and forth several times and it cleaned the threads up really nice. I tried to put the new filter on again and it still wouldn't go, but the old filter will. When I put the filter on, it only turns about a half turn or 3/4 of a turn until the gasket bottoms out on the housing, and that has always seemed different to me because with other vehicles I always get 3 or 4 turns of the filter before the gasket makes contact. So it is as if I need a filter where the female threads sit higher or almost even with the gasket instead of recessed down.
Super frustrated...any wisdom out there?
Thanks

Post up a pic of the filter nut...

I've had the same thing happen. I blame the manufacturer. If the second and third filter do the same, it probably means an error in manufacturing made the mistake multiple times and a whole run of filters (Shipped throughout the country) may be defective.
If only one is bad, I blame the operator of the manufacturing machine for maybe mishandling the product.

Thanks all, I ended up finding a winner with a fram filter. Threads are closer to the gasket

Fram? Uhhh...
Who is going to tell him about FRAM ?

Yeah, Fram is probably the worst brand one can choose, really....
lots of data online about automotive filters will tell you why.

They ask a question, they get the answer from several people who know and what do they do?

Nobody said to go out and buy a Fram filter!

Good ol' Fram comes through again. I've read the stuff about Fram. It also depends which Fram. I'm not convinced Fram is the worst oil filter out there. Here's my Fram story:
A couple of years ago my 318 was getting lifter clatter for a couple of seconds on cold start up when the temperature was in the teens and single digits. I happened to read some of the oil filter threads on the internet and found out about The Orange Can of Death. So, next oil change I got a Napa Gold. Using that filter I started getting lifter clatter even when the temperature was in the 40s and low 50s. Another thing, when I changed the Napa Gold filter it wasn't full of oil like the Frams I had been using. I went back to Fram, though I'm now using the Tough Guard (I think, it's gold instead of orange).
However, I use wix filters (1068) on the 400 because they are a little bit longer than the Fram PH43.
I do believe a wix filter is better than an Extra Guard (the orange one), but for regular 3,000/3month oil changes I don't know that it matters.
Fram is made in America and I've never had one not thread on, and, if you can't get a filter on the engine it's not much good, is it?

I've used the Fram HP-1 with no problems. I quit using their other filters...the ones with the black textured ends. THose are a great feature but the insides of the filters are junk !

Has there been an improvement since Trico bought them?
