Hastings pistons are they any good? Are they forged or cast?

As mentioned, cast. Hastings is a fine replacement piston. However, I could not imagine a worse piston to use. Your compression will be about 7.7:1. You'll likely be in minivan performance territory.

****, are you sure? =( How do you know?

The C/H is listed on the box.

From there it’s just a few minutes with a calculator.

In an uncut block, those pistons are +/- .080” down the hole.

If you’re not paying attention...... it’s really easy to end up with a 383 that’s a bit of a dud.

The BBM 400 HP syndrome
you were not thinking of a blower with those pistons were you?
I've ended up using custom pistons in these restore with stock head type builds with both stock cranks and 44 cranks and rods
Today I'd look at stroker kits
Tough choices on the available pistons for street compression

Are those pistons local to you? You MIGHT be able to get to 8.25/8.4 to one compression, but the work involved would not be worth it, just to try to use the wrong piston. (I got 7.7-1 for them too)
I realize shipping will be costly, but you will be much happier with the right pistons in the long run.

If you're buying new pistons, go for more compression height than 1.848
