I have a 65 Coronet with a 383. New Holley 750cfm, purple cam. It idles just fine inn Park or Neutral, but sputters and dies if shifted into gear. I have to drive with both feet. Any suggestions.

what rpm is it set at? could it be lack of vacuum when put is gear? Is this a new setup or it is just starting to act up. Timing? More info please.

RPM is at 1000 at idle. Timing I believe is at 8 deg. As far as the rest its been doing it since carb and everything was installed.

I'd bump that timing to at least 10 degree if not 12. Factory manual If I remember correct says 5 degree BTDC but I set mine at that on my old 67 383 and it spit and sputtered and wouldnt pull a greased hair out of a cats ***. Check for vacuum leaks. and work your way to setting the timing.

8 degrees? Most of the mopars I know of are running with about 18 degrees of initial. I'm running at about 22. Cant worry about what the FSM says about tuning; with the modifications our cars have and the garbage gasoline those factory tuning specs are worthless...

I just looked at the manual. 10 degrees BTDC or 5 Degrees at ATC. So I would guess you need more timing.. And with a different cam it could possibly be in the same area as Sanchez says.. 12 will give you a good starting point.

Electronic ignition? Double check reluctor gap @ .008" and check for eccentricity of reluctor on shaft. Had that happen on a MP kit.

All of the wiring and hoses are new. I'll check timing tomorrow when I get home. Thanks to everyone for the input and have a great weekend.

Idle should easily go down to 700-750. Check all vacuum ports on the carburetor and manifold. Agree that timing should be advanced several more degrees.

So, it started this after you installed the carb, cam, and what else?

What cam?

Could be timing, could be a vacuum leak, could be too big of a cam for the rest of the combo, or a combination of these.

My engine has similar issue with when throwing it in gear.
First of all, bear in mind that the higher the idle rpm, the more load your torque converter might put on the engine.
On mine i can manage by richen up the idle a little with the mixture screws to allow it to run a little stronger and overcome the tq converter load.

But yeah, some more info would be easier to diagnose.
Was the engine just rebuild, or did you install new camshaft, intake/carb?
Was this the same carb as before with the same settings that worked before any work done?
What is the manifold vacuum? Vacuum advance in use? (manifold or ported)
What torque converter? How much rpm drop do you see when throwing it from Park to Neutral and Park to Drive?
