Who’s a Member of Facebook - Why?

The good and the bad:

I joined the Facebook 71-72 Road Runner group and the same day I found the current owner of my parents 1971 special ordered Road Runner. I had given up finding it and just posted the story of how my parents had the car for a couple of years and then sold it to a friend of mine. The current owner read my post, still had the original California license plates, which I recognized immediately, and contacted me. He has it stored and waiting to restore it someday. He has another '71 RR to boot.

My best (only?) friend has a Facebook account and I read his funny posts once in awhile just to entertain myself. I know a few of his friends, so I read their posts occasionally also.

I use messenger to communicate with persons that I have known in my past (single) life just to say hello. It is difficult to find old friends on Facebook searches because you cannot limit your search by age (that I know of anyway) and it seems there are hundreds or thousands of persons on facebook with the same name of the person I am searching for. Then again, I believe some people on Facebook have a way to make sure they don't show up on any general searches (correct me on that if I am wrong).

I have only had one person look me up, a girl in seventh grade I knew by name when I was an eighth grader. I guess I won't win any popularity contests (then or now).

As far as popularity and friends "count", since I only have the one best friend in this world (well, maybe two if I count my buddy Leroy from Community College Auto Tech classes 1973-1976) I limited my "friends" number to ten persons and left it at that. I don't want it to look like I am Mister Popular when I am not. And who really has more than a handful of real friends anyway?

I don't post anything on my page (two or three things in the last five years) since I know nobody on there could care less what I am doing. The people I contact via messenger are not invited to be my friends, since I already mentioned my self-imposed "friends" limit is ten persons and I maxed out on that. And only a couple have asked me to be their friends (and those few are included in my ten).

I understand there is a forum on facebook to sell stuff which is becoming more popular all the time. I have not used that yet, but it may be a good resource to buy/sell. I hope this helps.

One more thing, most of my "friend suggestions" that pop-up seem to have no basis whatsoever. Appear to be just random picks from all over, all ages, all sexes, etc. A few are based on friends of friends.

the friends suggestions,if you check,
youll discover that those people Or their friends somehow know or have done business with Your friends on fb.
thats how that angle works.
i actually just figured this out 2 days ago.

as far as the marketplace, its ten times better than craigslist ever was.
you can See who you are dealing with,go scope out their profile page,
see what they are really like before you ever even contact them to do business.
ALWAYS run the name of the person First on the google/fb search to see if it pops up as a Scammer.
plenty of steals and deals on wheels there, use your head and youll be happy.

then theres the Groups.
ive been posting the mopar Swap Shop groups sales here for a year now.
theres also a Ton of Other mopar groups you can join.
im in quite a few myself.
these Groups are not only Great for finding cars and parts, they Also help You understand where the Current market is.
unlike some here who have 20 something cars in their backyard and preach prices even tho they wont sell their own.
or the wall of text person who rambles on and yet still has no idea of where the market is.

what i keep seeing here,is a lot of people dont seem to be able to tell that theres actually 2 sides to fb.
you can stay on your home page,
chat with friends post all the recipes you want and tell the world about your latest bowel movement
OR
you can use it like a Tool.
stay on your groups, dont accept random idiots as friends, and just enjoy the heck out of your groups and the marketplace.
the trick is to learn to use all your resources, and not just try to trash fb because you cant learn or cant be bothered.
only you can save you from Yourself.

final thought...as good as the fb is,Esp the Groups with the help and parts locating assistance,
it will never replace the Tons of Knowledge,Advice and References that This site provides.
Actually All of Joeys sites are packed full of great info.

If you want to know folks from your skeleton closet past. Facebook is your best friend. My wife is part of that. She seems to think its okay to post anniversaries birthdays what we do where we go. I just told her to mind her own fn business and dont include me in the postings I dont need the world to know what I do.

I have FB. Rarely have time for it! Wife and kid on it. Mostly, the marketplace is where I go if I’m on at all. Also, my Maine Guide business is on it as it was some clients request several years ago.. but really can’t stand it.

What's changed or increased is the vanity of some people. Personally, I dont want the world to know what I'm up to or where I'm at, but for others it's a kick to the ego to let everyone know what your current status is. I get it, I've been there, but ultimately I decided that I valued my privacy more and dont care what other people think about my life...

Been on FB for 8+years. Have got tired of all the political BS. I've been on it once in the last month. Belong to a bunch of Mopar groups which is the main reason I joined.
Great place for finding local car shows and cruises. Since it looks pretty bleak for shows this season I haven't been on there much. Just started using FB Marketplace. Sold my 89 Mustang vert and 75 bricklin the first time I listed anything for sale.
Only have about 100 friends but think I'm going to start thinning the herd. If their posts don't include Mopars, ******* or puppies I'm going to delete them.

Some people like it, some people don't. I like it. I keep in touch with a lot of friends and family. A lot of good pages like Rat Fink, Station Wagons, etc, whatever you're into. A lot of really funny stuff too. That's my main reason. I also have good luck buying and selling on Marketplace.

I move forward and people from back then, that aren't with me now, well, there's a reason for that. This site is as much talking as I care to do.

I’m thinking of joining Facebook but don’t know anything about it other than general stuff. My absolute only source of social media is FBBO. I’m retired and looking for more social outlets so I thought FB May be the way to go. Not looking for a lot of clutter but more opportunities to stay or get connected with people. How about you? How long and why did you join? Benefits? Thx in advance for posting.

After the 2016 election, I permanently shut down my Facebook account. Best thing I ever did. My outlook on life is so much better without all the mind rot.

Social outlets... invite the spouse, a friend, coworker, family member to coffee, or call them on the phone...

Some say that it's a great way to reconnect with old classmates and childhood friends, but there's usually reasons why we haven't kept in touch with each other for decades.

Makes sense to me.
I went to my 10 year and 20 year High School reunions. I didn't keep in contact with anyone after either one. Nothing against them, I just had no interest in what they had to say or seeing them again.
On principle, I refuse to join because of the founder of that platform.

I don't have it but I do go on my wife's for the Mopar group to sell/buy in the area

I have been a member of facebook for a long time. I mostly use it to keep up with many old friends from my military career. Most of my family does not use it

sorry to other members that sell stuff regularly,
it's not directed at you

that last part, is correct about FBBO

---------------------------------------------------------------

I assume you were attempting a flyby vague attack or insult me
with that little ditty comment...
or the wall of text person who rambles on and yet still has no idea of where the market is.

you're :fool: one to talk :hifu:
you really want to talk about a rambling incoherent posts ?...

Wall of text length to gander.png

I have a great grasp of "actual reality"
& a good better than most on the "real collector car market" too
not just scrap prices, junk, old worn &/or overpriced rusty used/old parts sales
"outdated" or their perceived market trends...

I know more about a whole usable & viable cars, without salvage titles...
Even of a few with them too... :poke:
Actual good running & driving cars, muscle or collector cars,
that are actually road worthy, not stripped or rusted hulls headed
to the scrap yard/crusher...

I'm not trying to buy, sell or hawk "my" parts all over the -www-
I don't need FakeBook as much as others, obviously do...
I don't need or want it, to complete my life, obviously
I really don't need it (facebook) or use it, to make a living either...

Like I said it serves it's purpose for some, that do need that sort of venue...

I don't care if someone chooses to use FakeBook
to each their own
Just don't try & sell me on it, or tell me what I need to think about it
or my thoughts are wrong
I know all too well about FakeBook, that's my opinions,
take it or leave it, I really don't care, what you think...

my $1.25 :soapbox:

screw facebook......the last thing i need are old girlfriends looking me up
In a funny way something like that happened to me a few months ago...

One of my friends (a real friend - fellow tradesman) innocently posted a picture of himself, his wife and another couple at a Car Club function recently. I looked at the picture and was horrified to see that face of the 'wife in the other couple'.
I asked my friend John to tell me her name, but he went silent after that on the subject. I didn't push it....because I suspect he realised I knew her, and may have also been in contact with her.
That woman is (100% sure on this) the one who ruined my life for the best part of 5 years back in the late 80's. Some faces never get forgotten, but I have managed to suppress my anger in the last 30'ish years over her. So pleased now that I escaped from that close call....turned out she was a filthy cheater anyway.
I have stories, but I won't share them now. :mob:
That's the best reason for having a false name on FB....and also for getting off it for good.

On a happier note, my phone has been so quiet the last few days. I had a phone call from my buddy Cliff ...and I told him I had deleted FB....he didn't notice, but he fully agreed with what & why I did it. I suspect he is doing the same now. :)

you never know which punched lasagna will come back to haunt you

I gather you guys are not to high on FB. I’d say about 90% said it sucks in so many words. Don’t need the marketplace any more so maybe I’ll just pass on it. Glad I asked. Thx for all the input guys!

What appeals to me may not work for you. Give it a try. What is there to lose ?
