I'm painting my '64 Dodge the factory color Formal Black. I started this project years ago when I painted the wheels and engine compartment. I used single stage paint.

I'm finally getting to painting the body and so I went to the auto paint supply store and got the pictured primer. I requested primer for blocking and painting single stage. This is what they sold me. That's all fine so far.

After buying the primer, I learned that Chrysler Formal Black is no longer available in California in a single stage paint. That's the California smog Nazis for ya. I won't get started on that...

I really didn't want the look of base/clear, plus I have more experience with single stage, BUT... if I can't find a way to get the color I want in single stage, and have to use base/clear; can I put it over this type of primer? Does the primer matter?

Order the single stage online and have it shipped to you. Just a suggestion.

I’m in the same boat as you; all I can get here is two stage. Here is what I do. Your results may vary, others may disagree.
I spray the base coat, then a thin coat of clear; essentially just enough to seal the base coat.
I’ve never done an entire car, just interior panels, the dash, etc.
I can’t stand the look of like twelve coats of clear. If I put a thin coat on it looks like single stage.
I use Matrix, like it, recommend it.

It's risky not sticking with a "paint system". Each component is formulated to work well with each other. If you mix it's a crap shoot with what you will end up with. Bubbling, peeling, flaking and cracking are common problems. With the amount of time and cost of materials I wouldn't risk it. Maybe it might be worth it to trailer it to Nevada and rent a booth. California banned acrylic lacquer because of the 50/50 paint reducer ratio. For every gallon sprayed half of it is vented back to the atmosphere. The funny thing about it is that it's still manufactured in southern California and no you can't walk in and buy it.

Give me that paint code and I'll check with the local guy.

Called my paint guy and he couldn't do much with the codes in your manual. He looked up his books and says in '63 to '65 there was only one "black". The Chrysler paint code for that was BB1 and he says making it in single stage Omni is no problem. Maybe try your guy again with the BB1 code. FWIW, they can do small samples.

Drive to Arizona or Nevada and get the paint mixed and bring it back. Old school hot rod shops do it all the time. That’s what I’m going to do when my 69 runner is up for paint. I’m in SoCal too. I’m painting it single stage black as well.

Bearman from this forum hooked me up with an Az paint shop who is supposed to ship to me once they have the binders they need. Just so happens my wife and I are taking a road trip to Yellowstone early next month. So if this Az paint shop doesn't follow through, then I will pick up the paint while on my road trip.

Burns69RT, do you go to Spring Fling? I've been going on and off for the last 20 years. Great show.
