Favorite oil

Standard Chevron 10-40. $11 for 5 quarts at walmart and i change it every 2500 miles. Learned my lesson with synthetics.

also i use motorcraft filters but dont tell no one.....

Rotella in everything. Used to run Castrol GTX 20-50 during the 70's starting with a Honda 350 SL and then put it in my cars figuring if it was good for the bike, it was good for the cars. A buddy tried to tell me not to use it but he couldn't give me a good reason so, had to learn on my own. It had too much detergent and not enough lubricity. The engines were all nice and clean but had very little babbitt left on the bearings. Never had the Honda engine apart so I have no idea where the material was coming from that the filter was picking up.

Red-Line when I can afford it.
VR1 in the older cars.
Castrol Edge in the newer cars
Mobil Delvac Extreme for the last two oil changes in the Diesel, but mostly because they have had a decent rebate on that oil ($9 / gallon rebate.)

  1. 0-30 in the 5.7 10-40 in the 440

DRIVEN oil is probably my #1 choice.
PennGrade (which is the correct name of the former Brad Penn) is good stuff also.
Valvoline VR-1 works too.
The key to all these is the proper amount of ZDDP (zinc) and phosphorus mandatory
for flat tappet cams....

For cooking, well, that's a whole 'nuther subject and one in which I'm active, too.
I have no less than (10) different oils/greases in the house at any given time and they
all play their roles in the proper application.
Beef, bacon and chicken grease/lard is kept and there is no substitute, health nuts be
damned.
Corn, Sunflower, Olive, Grapeseed, Peanut, Vegetable oils always on hand, too.

Brad Penn 10w40 in my 493 and o/t cars also. My engine builder uses it s that's what I go with. Been using it for years.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm using Pennzoil 10-30 right now but I'd like to switch to a 15-40. I'm just not sure which one

A lot of guys on this thread using diesel oil in flat tappet motors, hydraulic or solid. Passenger car oil has had most of the zinc removed because of the cats, and they dont need it with hydraulic rollers. Diesels dont use cats, so have more zinc in it, neccessary for good camshaft life with a flat tappet cam. I have lots of diesel around cause i buy it every time it is on sale, for my diesel pickup, and my flat tappet engines. Eleven quarts for the pickup, and eight quarts in the 62, kinda goes thru oil quick. 15-w40

Rams with Cummins or the little Ecodiesel, GMC diesels and Ford Powerstrokes use cats these days.

Used Rotella 15 40 in all my equipment / big trucks and even my Ford flat head but they did change the formula several years ago , not as much zinc now i'm told.

Valvoline VR-1 racing oil. Been using Valvoline since the 70's. Never have wiped a cam and its always been good in my engines, Ron

Re: Rotella
That's one of the old redneck adages in these parts:
"I use Rotella in EVERYTHING 'cause it's got all the zinc I need" they say.
Well, not necessarily....
I tell folks all the time to do their homework on whatever EXACT blend of oil they want
to run because there are some blends of Rotella that have ZERO zinc in them.
With the way the oil companies are playing with formulations these days (and the ever
lessening demand for zinc and phosphorous in them, like it or not), you gotta do some homework
from time to time.
Google IS your friend in this particular case - but the old answer of "Rotella" isn't necessarily so anymore.
