I just started driving my 72 Road Runner and I get at least 1-3 people asking me if it's for sale every time I take it out. I want to be nice to people and I am flattered that they like it so much but it's getting to the point of making me uncomfortable when people approach me now. Most keep pushing after I say it's not for sale and when I give an unrealistic number, they will scoff and say really!?

How do you all deal with that and what are some of your responses to those people? Both nice and mean are welcome. I just need to get some automated responses to put people off minus the go old eff off one. haha

My standard reply:
"No, Dad bought it new and it is part of the family-going to my son".

My response to For Sale questions is "everything is for sale", and "make me an offer". When put on the spot, most don't know what to say. I had one Gent ask me if I would take 30K for my Challenger ? I looked at him, and said I paid that for it before I tore it all down, and did a complete restoration on it, to get it to where it is today. He just kind of walked away after that...

I know how you feel. I like these cars and I drive them for purely personal reasons, but people do come up and talk about them or want to buy them. I tell people that this one is mine and that they'll have to find their own. And my nephew and niece have dibs on it.
The main reason I joined this forum was to have an intelligent conversation about these cars.

Yeah - that's the reply I've given "Everything's for sale for the right price." Some get it right off as I know what they're thinking...get a miraculous deal they can tell their buddies about. One guy at a car show left a note on my car with his cell # saying he'd pay me X amount. Was a ridiculous offer. Later the asshole sees me by my car and says "I left my number why didn't you call?" I bust out laughing and said I thought you were joking and if you weren't I wouldn't waste my time calling you. Next I might say some insane number to see their facial expression mask or not...lol

How much do you want for it!!! LOL :poke:.
Give them a stupid high figure, done.

Tell them your name is Roland LeBay. It will only frighten off the Stephen King fans though.

I usually say that I rode in this car when I was 10 and it is sentimental to me. Which is true. I don't often have persistent folks, but I usually say a unrealistic number, like 100,000.-

Drive in less crowded places - less folks in rural areas.

People that ask if it's for sale and then scoff at the number that you would like to get usually falls into the bargain hunter/flipper category.

They get angry when you wont give them a deal so they can turn it over for a quick profit.

Funny story:

I'm backing the ratty Coronet out of the driveway and a couple of guys stop, the passenger asks if it's for sale, I give my usual answer of no.

The driver yells out, "$20,000?"

I yell back, "Bring cash or a check!"

The passenger says, "I'll get back with you."

I can imagine the conversion in the truck.

Driver: "See, it's for sale; everybody has a price."
Passenger: "You asshole, I was trying to get it for $4000!"

How many of you have a door pocket/glove box with a bunch of these in it?

Nine out of ten people that want to buy the car have no idea as to the real market value these days. THeyre always much lower than what the car is worth. So yeah it is annoying and flattering at the same time. I just say make me a market value based offer and they don’t know how to respond. They just say nice car and walk away.

Worse than that when they see factory window sticker and they will give list price for it. At first I laugh it off but now it’s annoying

I figure everyone here has a value in their head as to what they would actually accept for their car (sentimental aside). I usually add half to that number and the inquiry stops there.
Say you'd accept $60k for your car. Tell them you're looking for $90k.

How much do you want for your Camaro!? It's pretty plain to see Challenger on it. My reply is I don't own a Camaro and if I did, I'd run it into a bulldozer. Usually get a dumb look and they get one back that's even dumber....

One way to get around this is to drive 4 doors and 67 Chargers:)

It’s nuts how much time, effort, money goes into a restoration, and I don’t blame “normal” people who truly have no idea. Just say “No.”

Mine is also a sentimental build and I came to the conclusion it won’t leave my living hands, most people respect that. It is partially a sign of respect in many cases too, so take it as a compliment.

I have to admit I don’t like it when a guy who doesn’t know a Charger from a Challenger throws out what he (always a he) thinks is a lot and acts like he’s doing YOU a favour. Mental middle fingers fly! But then they usually saunter down the road and try to impress someone else. Those guys rarely like getting their hands dirty.

And even aside the cash out of pocket, and the sweat equity we all put in, what is a 4 year time saver worth? Should be a crapload more than the receipts if you’re buying your way into the club.

On the other hand, how many stories do we read about one of us pursuing a car in a back alley/garage/field for decades and working over the owner until they’re so old they give in?

I like my brother’s response best, once when a guy in a then new Challenger ($50,000 ish in Canada) offered to swap him straight up for his Mopar:

“Don’t they still make make those?”

I always throw out a good round number ..
$100,000.00 today only Kmart shoppers
Love the wide eyes you get afterwards...as they turn away and mumble

I've had a few persistent people and after a couple of times saying no I generally ask them to please not ask again. If they do, then I get a bit pissy with them.
