bolting up 727 to 360

I have the trans on a jack and i'm trying to align the starter bolt to the engine block.

I'm having trouble moving the trans bell far enough to the passenger side to get this aligned properly.
Is it basically a constant struggle push/pull that eventually I'll get lucky to mate the two or is there some technique I should be applying here?

Sounds about right. You want to be sure the converter is fullY seated into the tranny first. It drops in farther when those two notches on the stem engage. If it’s not in there it’ll be miserable and cause all sorts of problems when you try to run.

That said it shouldn’t be *too* miserable.
 
I use a couple cut off 2 1/2-3" 7/16 bolts threaded into the tapped holes in the transmission, easier to line up the long bolts while the trans is on a jack then trying to line up those alignment pins...
 
Whats the difference in a small block 727 vs a big block 727? Could this be the problem?

This was the OP's first sentence.

I am just not getting something? Like the starter bolt doesn't align with the engine block so why try putting it there. That's what the pins in the block are for.
 
Similar to wild rt except i use 2, 3 inch 7/16 bolts to pull the engine and trans together. Then you can get the rest of them in and pull out the long ones. Once you thread the first one in good you can use it as a pivot.
 
I use two bolts in the block. Don't need those things sticking out the trans to pock a hole in me if it falls.
 
oh.. sorry.. misspoke.. meant to say the pin.

I ended up putting the tail cross-memeber bracket half way on (naturally even that was a PITA) so that end was somewhat square.
then i was finally able to get a bolt started.. and a second.. etc..

When you install any a/t or bell housing to an engine that it was not originally factory fitted to, you should always check that the housing is centered on the block. That is the purpose of the offset block pins. Yes, they are not always just straight. They are designed to give a small amount of adjustment to center the input shaft to the center line of the crank shaft. This is more of a problem with installing a standard transmission but can also be a problem with automatics.
